Ronaldinho close to Palmeiras deal

Rio de Janeiro: Brazilian giants Palmeiras have emerged favourites to sign out-of-contract former Barcelona star Ronaldinho.

The 34-year-old has been linked to Santos, Fluminense, Besiktas, Queens Park Rangers and Boca Juniors since leaving Atletico Mineiro by mutual consent in July, reports Xinhua.

But Palmeiras are understood to be closest to accepting a long list of demands set by the two-time FIFA World Player of the Year.

They include a monthly salary in excess of $90,000, 15 percent of gate receipts and 50 percent of income from sponsors signed after his arrival.

Palmeiras are long-time admirers of the former Selecao No.10.

The Sao Paulo-based club tried to sign the playmaker in 2011 and had another bid turned down earlier this year.

Ronaldinho joined Atletico Mineiro in June 2012 after a turbulent spell with Rio de Janeiro giants Flamengo.

The ensuing 12 months were regarded by many as the 2002 World Cup winner`s best period since his Barcelona peak in the mid-2000s.

But his form tapered off badly this year and he was substituted early in the second half of Atletico`s 4-3 victory over Argentina`s Lanus July 23. The victory, which earned Atletico the Recopa Sudamerica trophy, was Ronaldinho`s last match for the Belo Horizonte club.

Pls Paul. Make the swoop. Paul. Pls.

He'll certainly fit in the Paul Merson mould, at least regarding drugs and alcohol

As long as he does the footbally bit on a Saturday.

Sadly he hasn't really done this on regular basis since 2006

Edit: 09/10 at Milan was also a good season

I don't get this view of only laoning people we can have an option to buy on.

Why can't or shouldn't we loan someone who will help us for 12 months even if they do then go back to their parent club.

Loan deals are generally one of three types.

1. a young player whose club want to let him get some experience before they decide what to do; or

2. an established player whose club can't sell them on for any reason (wages age etc.).

3. Surplus to requirements because of other purchases made by the parent club (i.e a lot of the Spurs squad).

We have had a lot of the second type here that we couldn't shift over the last few years but the point is if they can improve us, even just for 12 months, then so what if they end up going back.  Beggars can't be choosers and let's face it we can't even afford what a beggar can at the moment it would seem.

Edit: 09/10 at Milan was also a good season

And 06-07 at Barca.

And '11 At Flamengo.

And '12 and '13 at Mineiro.

His absolute worst period was Barca 07-08 (9 goals and 4 assists in 26 games) and then at Milan 08-09 (when he managed a pitiful 10 goals and 8 assists).

I guess it all depends on if you compare him to Ronaldinho at his peak or against regular players.

Dinho will always have more football in him than pretty much every other player in the history of football.

But at 34 having missed out on playing in the World Cup at home, he's only out to make a few extra bucks while partying with his friends.

We can offer him neither of those things so he'll never come here.

Of course it would have been great to have a Villa shirt with Ronaldinho on the back

I think would be a good move to offer a swap plus cash for either: Jordy Classie, Tonny Vilhena or Mitchell te Vedre
