Stevo985 Posted January 8 VT Supporter Share Posted January 8 The only way I've ever enjoyed sprouts is sliced and fried with bacon. And now I can't eat bacon

This is a result of badly cooked sprouts Hands down the best way to cook sprouts is to microwave them Seriously, try it, they do not taste the same as boiled (much closer to their raw taste) and they aren't soft and mushy, much firmer in texture Since we discovered this we haven't eaten them any other way. Absolute game changer.

There’s hardly a meal I cook that doesn’t have some sort of onion in it, even if its just spring onions or red onions. It’s like, well, it’s just the base ingredient. It’s where you start.

I’m also very much team fry them in a pan. They can be steamed, but the problem with steaming is people over cook them and they really don’t do well for over cooking, they are the smell of school dinners when they’ve had 5 minutes too long. I have presumed that nobody is boiling veg this century. I would expect them to microwave at least as well as a cup of coffee.

Stevo985 Posted January 8 VT Supporter Share Posted January 8 Onions cooked are fine to be fair. In a meal or a sauce or whatever I have no problem with it. Even if they're really fried on a burger or something I'm ok with them. It's raw onions where I have the issue. Absolutely foul

Microwaving coffee is bad Microwaving sprouts is good You are right about overcooking them though, that’s what leads to the “sprouts are horrible” most of the time, they taste shit when they are over cooked. See pan frying is different because usually you’ll do them with something also and you’ll be increasing the fat content but for a big standard sprout for a roast- microwave every time

But still excellent with some strong cheddar in a crusty cob. And a decent pint.

Once upon a time I’d have a big gnarly allotment sprout that’s been around the block a few times and gets ‘Nam flashbacks. Now I’m buying packets of pretty little sprouts hand curated by Waitrose.
