It was interesting listening to the Gaffer, Graham of the Aston social delving in to his philosophical mode tonight after the game. after our lengthy debate, he said do you know, in the last 10 years the arguments being put forward now about how bad the Villa Team are in terms of their play, is exactly the same as it was all them years ago. despite all the changes..........nothing has changed. and more depressingly, nothing will, until we demand change. For ages now I have been pissed off with stats prior to matches against some teams where "XXXX team have taken more premier points off Villa than any other team" or "Villa have not won at home against XXXXX in XXXXX years" etc etc . Last night was another such where we have not beaten Arsenal at home since 1998. Disgrace. But this is a long term problem of us not competing at a certain level in years. We tried the short term fix with Oneill but it didnt work. What we need is a long term fix to our culture / philosophy / style / mentality / progression, call it what you like but in order to fix the issue where we see stats like that and that they stop for a consistent amount of time that needs a big change That change is not just a papering over the cracks change either. But that change will take some time, sorry and all but it does not get fixed in a year or two. And it does not get fixed if fans do not realise it needs fixing. If fans merely carry on think that all is well and just a tinkering change here or there, that we really are a club that should be in the top 6 as a right and struggle to come to terms with the realisation that we are not in the top 6 because as a club we have been heading down the short term fix route for so long that it really has affected our long term ability to achieve success. Where fans just think it takes a change of manager and then we'll be back in our rightful position without having to drastically alter some fundamentals at the club, well we'll never get better on that basis. That's why I support Lambert and will continue to 100% to the hilt (or holt) despite the short term immediate results. Despite the disappointments along the way. Because I believe in his vision, what he is doing and the fact that he needs doing. We need the changes highlighted above in order for our long term performances to improve on a consistent basis and not just the odd short term fix. /\ /\ Long term thinking /\ /\ Its a fair argument Richard but it still doesn't compensate for Lamberts poor tactics. Even last night he showed poor decision making in starting with KEA and then eventually sticking our best midfielder on the wing. /\ /\ Short term thinking /\ /\ Thanks for that incredible insight. Tell me how, has Lamberts poor tactics come to be placed in your well respected bracket of "short term thinking?" Exactly. Its all very well to bang on about a project and a long term plan, but you also have to deliver results in the short term and progress towards the long term aim. The facts are these: Lambert has had 3 transfer windows and is into his 4th, Benteke and Vlaar aside the squad is not better than the squad he inherited. We are consistantly out played and out thought by teams at home. The quality of football is horrible. He has failed to instill confidence in the players he has got. There is no evidence to support the arguement there is a change in "culture / philosophy / style / mentality / progression" or even an aspiration to that - the football is no different to that under McLeish or O'Neil - its dull, predictable counter-attacking nonsense and we have been sussed out. The bigger teams are too clever and out play us. The "lesser" teams pack the midfield and prevent us from breaking quickly. Moreover, Lambert seems incapable of finding an alternative to a one-dimensional plan. The fact he stuck our best CM on the LW last night to persit with his "plan" is all the evidence you will need. I don't expect league titles, european football or even trophies. But I do expect Aston Villa to compete with any team that comes to VP and I expect them to get a game. Far far too often under Lambert is has looked like an attack vs defence training session. What is worse is that I'm not convinced sacking him is in the best interests of the club either because the Ownerships record of appointments stinks. My opinion is that Paul Lambert is not doing his job well enough if a loan signing of Holt is the best solution he can com eup with to our current situation. (Whatever that situation is as many people will have different opinions of what the situation is) ? Holt is not THE solution. He is one signing that we will make this window and will be joined by others (hopefully) that will all play their part in helping our club in its objectives for this year. As a cover striker, the signing makes sense to an extent. In any other circumstance it would make no sense and I'd be pissed off too. If he was signing him as our main striker then yeah, mental. The sad thing is I've seen people say words to that affect un-ironically on here. Yep, let's at least see if it works out or not first... He seems obsessed with this idea that we can only play on the break all the time and eventually this gets through to the players in a negative way . In the first half last night it was as if the " give and go " idea was totally lost on the Villa side , especially Westwood who was static on far too many occassions . Also noted how Delph would be attacking on his own into a dead end with absolutely no support . The second half was better but Lambert really has to be more positive with a group of players who just seem to be terrified of going forwards. There are a lot of posters on here that keep pointing out that we have more points than last year and we are mid-table. We will see at the end of the season I suppose? Is he to be a (and it will need to be a widened) bench warmer? Will it be to replace Gabby or Benteke? Is Wiemann now a sub? What is Helnius and Bowery's roles at the club? Why have Fonz and Bent been moved on? The timing and the type of player that Lambert has seemingly got here is somewhat strange especially given then more pressing requirements in midfield and defence. The type of football we have seen this year has been awful, reliance on hoof ball and when that does not work (often) then mere capitulation as we have seen at VP. Is Holt the type of player that will change that philosophy? I understand the comments some are making this being a no risk, but is it? Who's nose will be put out of joint (deliberate choice of words) by his arrival, how much is he costing? What is this saying about Lamberts and the clubs strategy? Also why now? why not at the start of the window? why not immediately after Kozak got injured? You state all the strikers we have, yet many posters are creaming themselves at Klose (another stiker), which won't happen. Don't people realise these websites come out with these ridicolous rumours to get you to their website and click on adverts etc...?
