Both shows at the Birmingham Odeon. I quite liked the first gig, absolutely hated the second. Why? they were identical, word for word identical, same songs, same order, even the same ad-libs and Bono even climbed the speaker stack like it was choreographed.Never gave them a second glance after that.As it happens I would in all likelihood have disliked their music anyway but I can never be totally sure how much the second gig experience affected my judgement. The big one for me is Muse. Origin of Symmetry is still one of my favourite albums of all time but they've been getting worse and worse ever since. The only other notable one is Green Day. Their Shorley Wall EP is one of favourite things in the world ever, but their first album is absolutely just about the worst I've ever bought. They started releasing mainstream crap (sorry to sounds all hipster) and then I saw them live at the UT basketball stadium in Austin and it was the lamest, dullest, couldn't-give-a-crap-est performance I have ever witnessed. Came very close to walking out but as I am British I settled for a polite round of applause THAT I DIDN'T REALLY MEAN! Burn. I mean, fair play to them for finding a new sound that has proved massively popular, but I don't like it. They haven't released any song since their first album that sounds like their first album. Now I can't stand most of these tracks (probably after watching the self indulgent Song Remains the Same video). I kinda feel the same with Richter. I used to listen to him a lot when I was revising and don't get me wrong I think the guy is a genius. But the BBC do seem to use his work on bloody everything now.
