Have any of you chipped or remapped your car? Thinking about doing it but wanted other people's thoughts.  Also where did you go for your insurance? I've spoken to my insurer and they don't cover modified cars.

When i used to read Max Power magazine, the one name that always cropped for insurance was Adrian Flux. I think they are a broker who specialises in non standard cars (classic / modified / grey imports)

is it just for VAT?

a bit shit that her place are insistent on it, my previous places have said "expenses must have a VAT receipt attached" but then if you're missing one or they don't add up they don't really care (I was filling up 4 times a month and do over 1000m though)

Used them for an old Land Rover Defender (worst car I've owned but by far my favorite car I've had) about 10 years ago, they were very good, very competitive and good customer service.

Just had an e-mail from the car insurance, expected it to be the usual ‘here’s what we are doing during covid’ but it was actually to say as there’s less driving and less traffic they’ll be sending out rebates / refunds to policy holders. £25 back.

Better than a poke in the eye, on a policy that was sub £200 anyway!

  • 4 weeks later...

First phonecall today about end of lease on the car.

It’s two months away, but I guess the dance starts here. They’re not budging on having this car back, I’d expect them to offer an extension to the lease but that isn’t happening. So the only absolute in this, is that the current car goes back end of July.

Right now, on a first skim across the internet, Hyundai appear to have priced themselves way above what I want to pay. I got the current car because it was about £40 a month cheaper than a Prius. They appear to have flipped and the Prius is now £40 cheaper than the Hyundai.

There’s really no point in paying loads extra a month for a car that saves me petrol money, if I’ve simply switched where the same amount of money goes. The idea of something super fuel efficient was to save money but they now want so much more for the car, it’s wiped out the efficiency saving.

From the chat I’ve just had with the sales guy, I was not the first ever person to point this out.

I’m really working hard on making sure my mileage is much reduced in the future, which will hopefully mean more options on what car comes next. Might even see if I can go a few months without a car, or really drop the car size as we’re only months away from it being 2 of us rather than 4 of us.  Going to spend the next 2 months trying to convince myself I just need a scooter and some waterproofs.

Thinking I might get one of these new fuel efficient Land Rovers.

I know a bloke did London to Durham, Durham to a castle, castle to Durham and then Durham to London and didn’t need to fuel up.

Range Rovers can have tank of up 105 litres, which is about 23 gallons I think? Depending on model, lets assume the 3.0 diesel with quoted mpg of 25-30, gives a range of 575-690 miles.

Possible, although unlikely

I gave it a quick check, if he specified a bespoke model with the largest tank but the most fuel efficient drive and he didn’t encounter any junctions or lights on the way in or out of London and he drove smoothly at a consistent 67.5mph, then I refer you to @Phil Silvers answer above...

It'd make a good Top Gear challenge!

The question we should all be asking is who had the keys to the jet, was BJ on a ventilator in the Bahamas? and Gove took the chopper to St Tropez?

Why oh why did he have to drive in the first place?
