  1. The guy doesn't even look Championship level in this form. But he's been made captain and starts every week regardless. At the expense of Luiz, who was on the radar of Arsenal and Liverpool. FFS.
  2. I doubt it sadly. Purslow and Stevie will be arguing it's 'something to build on'.
  3. Free everyone. God he's shit. Watch us scrape a 1-0 and the misery continues.
  4. I didn't watch the City game but regardless I agree. Southampton at home under the lights will be a decent atmosphere and a tough place to visit. I expect us to win, for better or worse.
  5. Gerrard's only hope is that a Critchley mini pre season is a lot better than what he's capable of himself.
  6. The squad isn't really good enough to reach the ambitions of Europe yet I do agree with that - but it is good enough to finish in the top half of the league. Gerrard has made not only made us less than the sum of our parts, he's made the parts worse too. As Mark eloquently states above, the manager creates the conditions for the players to perform in. Culture, man management, coaching, tactics are all important elements of this. I have not seen any reason to believe that Gerrard is good at any of it - quite the opposite.
  7. We look a lot more solid with Luiz playing (why it's taken Gerrard so long to fathom that is another question). Coutinho has also been decent. It's hella dull though. We have no patterns of play going forward. West Ham are there for the taking but can we do it? Would love to see Buendia for McGinn if it stays like this.
  8. Defence is a concern but I think the midfield will be a lot more balanced with Luiz in there. We are guaranteed to concede so will need to score 2 or 3. Win would give our start a different feel, lose and Gerrard is hopefully on the way out. So on that basis it will be a draw which suits noone.
  9. It does say something that Leicester are loaning Akanji from Dortmund to replace Fofana, and we're taking Bednarek who can't get into the Southampton team. We're going to need a big season from Calum Chambers and pray Mings stays fit.
  10. I don't like these Castore kits at all. The home one is passable but the two away shirts are dire.
  11. We are far better with two up top, in part because we mainly use it at home against weaker sides, and in part because its sucks way less than the dumb ass 4321 Gerrard actually wants us to use.
  12. I'm happy to have him in the squad. Mixed bag tonight, did some good things and some things which didn't come off. Prefer Emi to be starting but more than happy to have Phil around the place.
  13. This would have been easy if he hadn't made an even bigger rod for his own back and least kept Ty as vice. Then McGinn drops out, Mings is captain, things are in order. Gerrard said that being captain doesn't guarantee a starting spot, but then Gerrard says a lot of things. We'll see.
  14. Poor start where a fired up Bolton team looked better for 30 mins against a side low on confidence. But in the end we stuck with it, improved significantly second half and took a comfortable win. There are plenty of sticks to beat Gerrard with but tonight isn't one. Huge game for him Saturday.
  15. We have a good squad (with a couple of holes). We are well run overall. We have an excellent academy with a great crop coming through. An expanded stadium is on the way. The foundations are in place for progress. We don't have a capable manager, but that is an easy fix relative to the other issues. Things have been a hell of a lot worse.
  16. Yep. Just goes to show what a huge difference a good manager makes. Hopefully we can get one.
  17. Why? He may not but it's hardly ludicrous. Significantly less so than, say, Ancelotti going to Everton, or Bielsa going to Leeds in the Championship. I think he could be persuaded, it's a very attractive job in terms of the potential of the club and the backing of the board.
  18. I don't think we will get that many points with Gerrard. Not even close. I don't see us sacking him this week but if we lose against West Ham there's good cause to make a change so the new manager can come in for a decent run of matches starting against Leicester, which really could be season defining.
  19. So shit that we beat Spurs, Chelsea and United over his last few months. Imagine a Gerrard Aston Villa beating any of them (United maybe at a push). Smith deserved more time.
  20. My best mate is a Watford fan. Says he's talented but inconsistent and has gone off the boil. I'm not concerned that he's a poor player I just don't understand or see the point at all. I hope the club don't sanction a big money spend for a lame duck manager, unless it's a position we clearly need, which this isn't.
  21. I watched the body language of the players heading out for the second half and it's obvious to me he's lost their confidence. No-one talking, McGinn looking anxious and failing to offer leadership, everyone just shuffling around, walking and not jogging back to their places for the game. Just get rid now it's so clearly done.
  22. Totally. Will be a strange situation for the new manager to sort out.
  23. We had organic growth and a long term approach. And then he was panic sacked to get a big name in.
  24. I think sacking Smith was the wrong call. I think hiring Gerrard was the wrong call. Purslow is good off the pitch but I don't trust his football instincts at all. However, if he is ruthless here at least it shows he's not too stubborn to admit when he's wrong.
