  1. Yes, they 100% would have. I'm talking as a 'local' that grew up 40 miles down the road, not in Bristol. The people of Bristol are well acquainted with Mr Colston and the many ways he has been used as a political battlefield.
  2. It's great the impact the statue being pulled down like that has had isn't it!
  3. Also it's worth noting I'm pretty sure it wasn't publicly known he was a slave trader when the statue was first erected.
  4. It's not a genuine argument. Just like saying they should have gone through proper channels, which has failed for years despite overwhelming popular support.
  5. And his name is still on many of the buildings his money went towards. I think the main distinction is between organisations he donated to that serve a function and tell part of the man's story and a statue built by others to idolise. Now the statue has come down a lot more people will know what that name means and I imagine there will be some institutions voluntarily renaming themselves. People talk about pulling down things built by slaves, but I really can't see the relevance. I don't think anyone thinks the statue was built by slaves as it was built after slavery was abolished, it was built to commemorate a successful human trafficker. As an aside, that statue has been controversial in Bristol as long as I can remember. People in Bristol have largely wanted it removed but it always seems to me in the middle of some organisations or another fighting and using it as a political tool. It also makes me laugh that people talk about preserving history considering the statue has been used as a tool to try and rewrite it e.g.* *Wikipedia
  6. Very good point. Makes the stuff @bickster lists even more shocking in that context.
  7. Really great to see how many of them are involved in 1st team training on the most recent video. It's probably mostly a practicality but I wonder if Smith is expecting to have to utilise them with the ridiculous fixture congestion coming up.
  8. Lindsey Graham has been accused of frequenting male escorts and getting them to call him ‘Lady G’. I didn’t want to post the tweets as I have no idea where it originated but it gave me a chuckle. edit - can’t see a source as apparently they’re talking to journalists and trying to break NDAs
  9. Just googled it and it looks like it is going to be very soon. A few marketing materials released recently and people seem to expect it to air in July like the first series. I guess I didn't choose too bad a time to binge!
  10. I don’t think anyone in here has mentioned The Boys. I just binge watched it and really enjoyed it. It’s a dark comedy dealing with superheroes in a world they’re mostly employed by a big corporation that outsources them. I’m not into many of the superhero movies or shows, but this is very different.
  11. Do you want the good news or bad news? Definitely on the wind up though. He's got Newcastle and Birmingham fans raging.
  12. I'm not sure about that. He had 10 league appearances totalling 180 minutes in his season with us. Admittedly we'd probably do this with any player but I remember myself and countless others being frustrated how little we used him that year. He still had a hell of a lot of improvement to make, but his pace could cause serious problems.
  13. It clearly doesn't happen anywhere near as frequently in the USA, but we do still have problems over here. George Floyd death: Olaseni Lewis's mother 'can't watch' US arrest video The fact 11 men can be deemed by an inquest to have used excessive force restraining someone and still get cleared of gross misconduct seems odd to me. These officers weren't cleared of a crime as they weren't charged, they were cleared of doing their job badly enough to face any recourse. This after restraining a man in a way that caused him to die of brain damage 6 days later.
  14. I’m pretty sure he was being sarcastic, but I’ve been surprised before!
  15. The Windrush generation are also legally allowed to apply for indefinite leave. Unfortunately it hasn’t stopped many being deported.
  16. Bastards. Sunderland are shafting their fans too. No refund, but you get to stream the rest of the home games. Not sure why they couldn't chuck away games in considering crowd sizes aren't a consideration and ~£20 a game strikes me as rather expensive for streaming.
  17. Douglas Luiz exclusive: How fierce favela life set Aston Villa midfielder up for the Premier League
  18. And if you're not permitted to use it...it shuts so you have to shit on the floor?! Imagine being the poor bastard having to plough through picture after picture of rotten anuses to start off the machine learning.
  19. I don't think anyone's arguing we wouldn't sell him if he wanted to leave, they're pushing back against the bizarre assumption that we'd have to sell him for whatever Man Utd felt like bidding. Look at the likes of Zaha. If Crystal Palace can say they wont sell Zaha for less than £70m up front, why on earth can't we do the same? I understand people saying if we go down and he wants to leave we may need to adjust the price, but I think it would be more like if we were looking for £80m, we may accept £70m. There's no way we think he's worth £80m and end up selling him for less than half because he asked nicely. Also, if Man Utd really want him they will buy him even if it costs £80m. If they're not that arsed and put in a derisory bid I'm not sure it screams to Grealish that they value his ability as a player.
  20. From what has been said it seems clear Xia was offering him out as we needed the cash when he owned us so at that point he believed he was moving. The new owners came in and said we wont sell him and they were true to that. From things that were written at the time it also seems Grealish was sold the idea that his transfer fee would save the club so it's no surprise he talked to Tottenham when they bid. This is how it came across to me at the time and I've not read anything since that has made me think differently. Just thought I should write it once more to try and head off the rehashing
  21. I’ve been thinking about changing industries (or role within) for a few years. I would have stuck, but unfortunately I’m being told we have very little work and when I return I’ll still be on probation so if they needed to get rid of me with a weeks notice they can. I’m not too upset as it’s been a plan for a while and it seems like a good time to explore leaving London too. The difficulty is, as you say, whether the jobs exist.
  22. Has anyone made a big career change that may have some tips? I'm currently a chartered surveyor and am seriously considering changing jobs and moving out of London (@KenjiOgiwara). My area of work is going to be a little stretched when I get back and I've been thinking about making the change for a while so now seems like a good opportunity. I'm still not 100% whether to get out of property in general or just move to another role. My preference is the former, I'm just being held back a bit by caution and lack of knowledge. The only problem is I'm a little clueless about what doors my 'transferable skills' would open. I'd say I have good soft skills; presenting, negotiating etc but most of my technical skills are to do with property valuation and law so they couldn't be carried over. I've been responsible for training and managing a small number of people in the past, but never a whole team. I probably need to speak to a recruiter...
  23. It is dreadful, but unfortunately murder of individuals is a daily occurrence so it simply isn't as shocking. The reason it isn't as bad for me is that there are power structures behind what Trump is doing. I feel for the guy's family and it's a dreadful way to go trying to stop some opportunistic scumbags. The difference is you are supposed to be able to trust the police. "To Protect and Serve". They're just as bad as the other thugs, it's amplified because they're able to do it in uniforms with the full support of the president. Police using deadly force in America isn't exactly a new concept, but seeing the sheer violence the police are using against peaceful protestors at the moment is something quite shocking, at least in my lifetime. Add to that the press are being targeted, cameras broken etc then it's truly dystopian. The President mobilising the army against his own people is unheard of. Add in suspicions he may be using mercenaries with no accountability and it's absolutely terrifying.
  24. If you've not scattered them yet they could do a job soaking up the piss and saving a fine in the first place. I really hope it isn't a fresh loss for you! You take a risk with these type of jokes on the internet...
  25. It wouldn’t be hard at all to confirm identity on a phone call in this instance You get a randomly generated code when you register, write it down, and they read it back to you the first time they call. Pretty easy.
