  1. You can't be too bad, if you can still remember that the plural of 'after-effect' isn't hyphenated.
  2. Whether it is good players or good managers, the only rule at Villa is that they move on. The one thing about Unai is that there was something about how things were arranged at Arsenal, which he didn't like, and so the shambles at United might not have much appeal. Unai has managed nine clubs and the longest he's stayed was four years at Valencia. Clubs go through cycles and managers tend to leave when the positive cycle ends: Villa are still in the upward phase, and so I feel we are okay for the present.
  3. I think it is being over-weight which causes type 2 diabetes, not the other way round. Something like one in ten men in the UK suffer from diabetes, which adds up to almost 4 million people in the UK who are diabetic.
  4. Eating that much sugar can lead to insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes. If your target weight is 14 stone (89kg) you can eat an average of 2700 calories a day, which doesn't amount to masochism. People trying to live on a 1000 calories a day, are certain to fail in the long run.
  5. I understand that that will be mostly fluid. A pound of body fat contains around 3k calories, that is why diets are so arduous - so much sacrifice for so little weight-loss. I would say that if you have a target weight, you should allow yourself around 12-15 calories per pound of that target, and avoid the starve and binge cycle. As Les Crane told us back in the day, "Be gentle with yourself!".
  6. The wittiest thing I ever heard on the subject of cladding, was a rather snooty remark about it always reminding them of Piet Mondrian.
  7. Villa missed several good chances early on but as Luton have got more disciplined Villa have run out of ideas, and they think that if they play it quicker, they are likely to give the ball away, and get punished on the break. Villa look comfortable but definitely need another goal.
  8. Bloody hell, I'm not really that pissed!
  9. Pedro Neto has just been carried off after going down in the same part of the pitch where Mings done his knee. It seems like there might be a problem with the pitch.
  10. Bailey had an excellent game to night but more importantly he's obviously got his mojo back - he even walks differently.
  11. The problem with talking to your kids about bullying is no father wants to admit that they were bullied when they were at school. I think most people suffered a certain amount of bullying at school: boys tend to use violence and girls use psychological abuse. As Elaine said in Seinfeld, boys have to suffer a wedgies, and girls get teased until they develop an eating-disorder.
  12. You are Grayson Perry and I claim the £5!
  13. With both Doku and Grealish together on the pitch tonight, it was possible to compare the two: Grealish was better.
  14. I think making a list of stuff you might fancy might help to fend off the ennui!
  15. A fine example of the tyranny of too much choice: the sheer amount of stuff just seems to kill my enthusiasm.
  16. Hay on Wye is guaranteed to make you feel like Buridan's ass (cue KW meme), as it's impossible to decide whether to stop in the shop you are in or try another. Just to add to the wonder of the place, on my first visit, the first book I randomly picked up was about the history of the place where I was living at the time.
  17. It used to be a proud boast and consolation for the British, that we might be a third-rate nation but we knew how to queue. The inability to follow queue etiquette was always assumed to be one of the many bad habits of Johnny foreigner. The nation has definitely gone to the demnition bow-wows!
  18. Bailey's goal was his best since his debut and should give him a boost of confidence: his stats are top-notch!
  19. I've heard several people with tastes very much stuck in the classical era, who struggled to enjoy the romantics and the likes of Mahler et al.
  20. I have long thought that there is a 'critical period' when people establish their taste in music, which begins with the onset of adolescence and possibly lasts about a decade, when it becomes more difficult to establish a taste for the new. I've also noticed that this can be very much the case with people who are passionate about jazz or classical music. It would be an interesting experiment to see whether people's choice as expressed by their votes, confirmed or refuted my belief.
  21. Charlton's tears was one of the most poignant moments in English football history. He always said that his emotion arose from the criticism which followed England's defeat 3-6 by Hungary in 1953, but I suspect that he must have had other thoughts about those who died in the Munich air disaster, only eight years earlier, which he must have felt incredibly blessed to survive. A fabulous player and the very definition of 'ambassador of the game'.
  22. My Dad's home brew was notorious as it had the aroma of a sweaty sock, if I ever said anything good about it, he knew I was after something.
  23. Nice kit but here in the UK the term "home brew" usually conjures up the vision of a plastic dustbin wrapped in grandad's old over-coat, giving off the smell of Weetabix.
  24. In my experience the results are usually much better from someone who has grasped the nuances and fine details of cookery, which in most households is wifey. So basically a Brewster is preferable to a Brewer.
