  2. While I was aware of football/the Villa beforehand, the first games I have real memory of would've been around 1998, so McGrath was just before my time. However, once I got into football my dad gave me loads of old VHS videos. The 1982 Cup final, first PL season where we finished second, 1994 Cup run, as well as old MOTD compilations and world cup home recordings. He spoke almost as highly of Paul McGrath as he did for Maradona, and that tells me all I need to know
  3. Can only assume you're TROlling us all with sarcasm here
  4. We got our Villa back Nothing else matters
  5. I know next to nothing about films, but doesn't look like anyone has mentioned Billy Elliot and feel it deserves a mention
  6. A fair point, but I'd say Toney's world cup contribution was about as minimal as Ollie's
  7. Ollie's contribution was fairly minimal though if we're being honest
  8. This is incredibly disrespectful towards Conor, who remains one of our most handsome players of recent years. McGinns attractiveness is derived more from his wonderful personality
  9. Hope none of the people going apoplectic about those pictures with the lion have ever eaten factory farmed food, consumed mass produced dairy or eggs from battery hens. As a vegan of 15 years, I see no difference between what they've done here and any other form of animal cruelty. You either care about all of it or none of it, making a big song and dance about this one ill-judged decision by some of our players comes across as performative outrage IMO. Don't hate the player, hate the game
  10. Think you're probably right on this one mate, he still has a part to play for me. Question is whether he wants to stick around if he finds himself as more of a rotation player or if he will want to move on to somewhere he's more likely to be a guaranteed starter
  11. I reckon his legacy as one of the 'golden generation' probably taints his chances tbh. Fat Frank probably has a better chance, seen as he at least brought youngsters through at Chelski
  12. I would be absolutely amazed if the FA were to actually consider him as a candidate tbh. Its not like he even has the temperament for the job like Southgate
  13. Because most their fans don't actually watch any football. Someone pointed it out a while ago on VT and it remains probably the most apt football observation I've come across - their fan base is pretty much entirely made up of English far right EDL types and (mostly) overseas plastics who had no interest before the Abramovich years. You know those weirdos on social media who jump on any post which remotely criticises Cristiano Ronaldo? That's a significant portion of the Chelsea support
  14. I'm in my 30s and have been going Villa Park since I was 6, I don't remember us winning the league cup in 96. I might be wrong, but I reckon we'd still be making a massive deal of it if we'd beat citeh at Wembley in 2020 and if we had I wouldn't be surprised if there was a mural of Jack lifting the cup on Trinity Rd
  15. We'd almost certainly do exactly the same if we were to win a league cup anytime soon tbh. That photo of Jack and Dean at the play off final would probably still be on the North Stand if he hadn't been sold
  16. Stays with us as long as we match his ambitions, but I can understand people being anxious about him leaving - after Jack he was the one player who could arguably start for most CL teams. If he stays long term I reckon he'll end up regarded as an absolute and undisputed Villa legend
  17. Plenty of evidence that we are going backwards with respect to some of these points. Inequality has skyrocketed since the 1980s and the gap between rich and poor is roughly analogous to the Victorian era, while life expectancy has stopped growing for the first time a century and actually declined for the poorest women between 2010 and 2020. I broadly agree with your point, but think you can make a reasonable argument that living conditions have already peaked for people in western countries in some respects
  18. Really pleased for the lad, what a fantastic experience for him. Bet when he first moved here he'd never have imagined playing in a world cup. Lots of respect for how he's thrown himself into it as well and is making a real effort with the language. Just comes across like a lovely lad and I think he still has room to improve for us too
  19. I think that Ashley Westwood fella has been remarkably consistent... One of Modric, Iniesta and Ibra for me
  20. Basically the opposite for me, I am excited for it, as I love the world Cup, but am actively avoiding paying it any attention. I would normally watch every game and would bet money on it etc. But am incredibly determined to avoid this tournament. Enjoying top level professional football involves a necessary suspension of our usual sense of morals and justice, but this is just too far for me. I want no part of it, and if a significant minority of people think like me and viewing figures/revenue generated are down overall as a result, then that is basically all I can do to register my disgust at the whole thing. Friends and people at work who only ever take in a football match during international tournaments have asked if I've been enjoying it and are generally really surprised that I'm boycotting it
  21. Would be a shame to see him go, he is clearly a talented player who is not yet at his peak. At the same time, he's never really fully shown what he could do here. If somewhere we're to offer a silly price, he's also never shown anything to suggest he's irreplaceable. Get the sense with Bailey that he has to be personally invested for you to get the best from him, and suspect if there was serious interest from the top 6 that his head would be turned and we'd probably be best off cashing in
