  1. Wolves are shit, and we should be beating teams of their level, but it's still technically a derby of sorts and they always seem to raise their game against us, especially at home. Our recent record against them is shite, but I'm hoping that we can finally break the curse. I'm sure that Emery didn't have a good record against Lopetegui, so now that he's gone maybe he'll give O'Neil a bit of a masterclass. It'd be great to go into the international break continuing our good form, especially as we often tend to come out of the breaks looking a bit ropey. 2-1 Villa.
  2. He had a much better second half. He was losing his man constantly in the first half. Any sniff of an attacking opportunity for Mostar was coming down that side. He was much better when shifted over to the left.
  3. I was in the upper Doug Ellis, in P3. The atmosphere died in the first half after the first 10 mins or so, but I think that was reflective of how flat the game was. To be fair to Mostar, I think the executed their game plan perfectly - they stood off and let us try and break them down, but our movement off the ball was pretty much non-existent so it made for a pretty dull affair. Second half was much better from where I was sitting. We woke up after we made the changes and it definitely gave the crowd a big lift. It'd be brilliant if we could keep the intensity in the stands even when the game's gone flat, as you see with the European teams. As other posters have said, it seems to just be a thing in English football generally, not just a Villa thing.
  4. Buzzing with the win. A real game of two halves. To be fair, Mostar executed their game plan perfectly in the first half. Frustrated us, silenced the crowd, slowed the game down. There was no press from them at all, they were happy to sit back and make us break them down. We were way too static in the first 45 until we came to life a bit in the last few minutes. Second half, Mostar defended like their lives depended on it, and fair play to them. It did feel like it was only a matter of time before we took one of our chances, though I was fearing the worst on 90 minutes. Can't fault the character of them to keep pushing right til the end.
  5. Got a birthday card from him when I was a kid. That's going on eBay if Ollie doesn't get a call up...
  6. It does make me laugh every the club claims that the new badge "didn't have the desired effect". The fact that they haven't used it anywhere except for the kits and have gone into the season with 2 badges hasn't exactly helped...
  7. I don't really know anything about this side, but I've had a look and they've won the Bosnian Premier League the past 2 years. Modric played for them at one point, 20 years ago!
  8. Met Steven Wilson today at his album signing in Manchester. What a lovely bloke. Took the time to speak to and listen to everyone, which is awesome when things like this have a habit of feeling clinical and rushed. His new album is rather good too!
  9. 7 goals in the Villa v Brighton game. A very significant game between two high flying sides looking to break into the top 6, and very unexpected result for most people. MoTD starts with Spurs v Plop.
  10. Like we all said, it's gonna take a loooooong time to sort that pile of shite out. They can start by getting that exercise bike out of the bogs before they can talk about promotion.
  11. I'm hoping that we start with a pretty much full strength team. If we do well and have a decent lead, then start making changes and resting key players for Wolves. We slipped up against Warsaw, and we can't afford to give ourselves another mountain to climb. As much as I think the the Premier League is the priority, I REALLY want us to go all out and win this thing. We're out of the Carabao Cup, so that's slightly less fixture congestion. Let's just go balls out and try and bring a winnable trophy home this season.
  12. We have a pretty favourable run of fixtures coming up. Wolves, West Ham, Luton, Forest & Fulham. The Villa we're used to would normally piss these fixtures away and we'd come out the other end frustrated that we've missed a big opportunity to rack up some decent points. If we're wanting to really cement ourselves in the conversation for top 6 and higher, we need to keep our foot on the gas in that stretch and shake off our old habits. Thus far, we've won the fixtures that we've been expected to win, so I'm confident that we have it in us to keep it going. Win the games you're expected to win, and pull off a couple of "shock" results and that puts us right up there. We will have shit results this season, as everyone will (look at City today), but if we can get some general consistency over the season, we could be in for a very fun one.
  13. Steven Wilson's new album - The Harmony Codex. About half way through it at the minute. So far, feels like it's easily his best since Hand Cannot Erase (and I loved To The Bone, thought The Future Bites was okay). Loving it.
  14. The only thing I can think of is that Castore didn't actually do any testing on the shirts. There's no way that they would have done any sort of destructive testing or water testing on them, looked at the results and thought "Yep, that's fine". It may not sound like a big deal, but the last thing that you should be needing to worry about as a professional footballer is an uncomfortable kit. Please just bin them off and give us Umbro or something....
  15. Same here. I can't afford to go to games in every cup competition, and it's been so long since we've had European football at home that this competition takes priority for me.
  16. It's remarkable that we're up there in the top 6 mix when we haven't really been at our best. We've been able to pull off wins when we're really yet to hit our stride, which is huge when we have ambitions of finishing in the European places again. We will have bad losses this season (we already have). We will lose games to teams that we should be beating, as every single team in the league will (even City will likely have 1 or 2 shock defeats). But it's evident that there's something different about this Villa team under Emery.
  17. It really looked to me like the players thought it was going to be easy. It's disappointing, as I'm sure Unai with all of his European pedigree would have emphasised the fact that it doesn't matter if you're the stronger team in a stronger league, which is the case with any cup competition. The first thing that you need to do in these games is match their intensity. You know that they're going to be physical and try to move the ball quickly to make up for the difference in quality. We didn't match them at all on that front. This competition isn't going to be a cakewalk by any stretch, and hopefully this game will have shown us that so we can get it right for the next 5 group games and hopefully beyond.
  18. I think Emery will have learned a lot tonight. The issue is, we were relying on our entire squad to see us through what is (hopefully) going to be a very busy schedule. Some of the players tonight just looked like they didn't want to be there, which is a real kick in the teeth when we were all buzzing for what was our first competitive fixture in Europe for over a decade (Yes, Hibs was Europe but I'm talking an actual competitive game on the continent). The 2 changes in defence was a really odd decision, but I'm sure Emery will feel that his faith in that back 4 was misplaced and we'll go for a more settled defence in the next one.
  19. He's not the kind of RB that Emery needs in his system (I'm not sure he's a RB at all to be honest. I always see him as a CB). His lack of pace was causing us no end of problems for the entire time that he was on.
  20. Zaniolo was one of the few bright sparks for me tonight. Thunderbastard of a shot that led to the first goal. You can see that he definitely has something about him. Wasn't a perfect performance by any means, but provided one of our few attacking threats.
  21. Well, that was a bit shit. We were absolutely shocking, almost to a man. It's a tough one really. In hindsight, maybe it would've been best to go with a full strength starting XI that have had chance to settle already this season, and then make the changes if we have the game in the bag. In fairness though, most of us thought that our starting XI was good enough to win this, on paper. It does show that you simply can't underestimate anyone in this competition, especially away from home. There's plenty more games to play, and I'm sure we'll be okay in terms of getting out of the group, but it was slightly concerning how a number of players just looked like they couldn't be arsed tonight. Hopefully it'll give us a much needed kick up the arse.
