£12m for Shane Long has got to be one of the worst bits of business this summer.

its not the best but he cost similar to Enner Valencia, Ross McCormack, Leandro Ulloa, Jake Livermore, Fraser Forster or Ideye Brown. at least with Long you know what your getting in the Premier League

They've made some odd signings, £22m on both Long and Forster represents terrible value for money. They really should be using the money more astutely, rather than blowing it on barely top half quality players.

For about the same amount we got Benteke, Kozak, Vlaar, Cissokho and potentially Sanchez. Mental.

The money has gone to their heads. Feel sorry for the fans. After selling such key players, seeing Long arrive for that price is deflating.

We're not in a place to feel sorry for anybody's fans.

And for the same amount we paid for Bent. It's all relative. The keeper could turn out to be one of the best in the league and Long could easily bang in 15-20 goals every season. They are having to pay over the odds for their targets because everybody knows they have got money to spend.

But it also shows the club is backing the manager to sign the players he wants.

Really? Since when has he done that in the top flight? Never is the answer.

The thing with Long is that he has always showed signs that he is a talented player but for whatever reason he hasn't found the consistancy. It's conceivable that something could suddenly click and he suddenly starts scoring regularly but he is 27 now and hasn't done it yet so it was a crazy fee on the face of it.

I have to say I thought Southampton would be snapping up better targets than the likes of Forster and Long.

Problem is better players will go for a lot lot more, as teams know about the pot of gold. Long is probably worth 5-7m, but goes at a premium, so Bony (as an example) would be 20m+

Thing is with Long, when he stops scoring goals he'll still be working hard. Managers and fans like that. And at 27 he's not going to stop scoring goals soon. He's just entering his prime. I reckon double figures this year so that 12 million price tag whilst full, will not be thought excessive. It's about the right amount given his experience, moderate ability to score goals. and the Jay Rodriguez aspects to his game that so are important for the team.

Fair enough but he does work hard and contribute a lot to a team. I really like him and even though me not be worth 12M he is still a good addition to their squad.
