Language isn't set in stone, it's in constant flux, evolving. If enough people follow an error it eventually becomes accepted as part of standard lexicon.

so thats means eventually the grammar nazis will be in the wrong!

My point exactly ;)

People who write poems that make no sense
Do not inspire me with confidence

Anything
Suit yourselves.

Seriously, does any of this make any sense to you?

"At the apex of our humanity, we are as gods among our children. There is light in all their eyes- sharp, brilliant grins- enough to make happiness chase its own tail, forever, like some infinite ideal.

Or some ideal infinity."

OK technically it's not a poem but still, fine piece of pedantry.

Sophistry, even. Where's it from?

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding

Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing

Memory and desire, stirring

Dull roots with spring rain.

Winter kept us warm, covering

Earth in forgetful snow, feeding

A little life with dried tubers.

Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee

With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,

And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,

And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.

Bin gar keine Russin, stamm' aus Litauen, echt deutsch.

And when we were children, staying at the archduke's,

My cousin's, he took me out on a sled,

And I was frightened. He said, Marie,

Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.

In the mountains, there you feel free.

I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

True, but there's no harm in trying to educate them and point out the error of their ways before they manage to 'achieve' that!

Exactly BOF.

If something has changed over years and years then fine. But there could come a point when we have acceptable words/ sayings in our language that just don't make sense. That will annoy me!

"One in the same" doesn't make sense, gramatically, imo.

If you say that "XXX and XXXX are one and the same"... They are one (and the same).

Whereas saying "XXX and XXXX are one IN the same". Means they are one... in the same? I don't see how that can make sense.

Or sometimes people say "One of the same"... which again, doesn't make sense.

All "in my opinionnnnn", of course... I'm no expert!!

Already done - there are so many examples of such instances in English. See Folk etymology

Grammar nazis won't be right forever ;) face it :D

Umm, yes they will. The grammar Nazis will change as the language changes. After all, they're just there to point out when you get it wrong. Idiots, on the other hand, will be wrong forever :D

You don't get the Ethan Moore joke!? You're missing out.

Don't you try and run from the donkey business Shilham! My most memorable quote of MONs departure.

More good points by BOF! I hate being a pedant, but I am what I am..

TUS, I think Shillz had his picture as donkey from Shrek instead.

(Though he's removed it now, so maybe that means he did the dirty deed?)

:winkold:

I just found out that HP Lovecraft was a mental old racist.

Him being a clearing in the woods shouldn't ruin my enjoyment of his writing, but it's just not the same anymore. It's like admiring Hitler's taste in cars.

A knight would dick over a pirate.

Exactly!

They even showed that bullets from a pirates gun could only dent a knight's armour and that a broadsword could slice a pig in half in one swing!

I know, the knight can swing a mace, use a staff, longsword, broadsword, spear, lance, longbow etc. A pirate can swing a cutlass and fire a dodgy pistol.
