Con's favorite "key passes" stat, for instance, relies on a person deciding which passes are key and which are not. In baseball, however, you have either gotten on base or not. No subjectivity needed. It's not subjective. You don't understand how it works. A key pass is that which would have been an assist if the shot at goal had gone in. It's inevitable that a proportion of key passes will be uncreative like this, just as a proportion of assists will be like this. Ashley Westwood's assist for Brett Holman's goal against Fulham was a short pass backwards. That doesn't make the 'assist' statistic any less meaningful but obviously there are hard and easy assists. We should not forget though that sometimes the clever pass is the short one sideways to the long shot specialist, so we should not automatically dismiss uncreative key passes/assists as unimportant.
