Transfer Speculation (Summer 2013)

This thread is pointless until we know which league we are in.

Yeah i kinda agree

But as many of the players we've been linked to (accuratly or not) play in the lower leagues it still kinda workes.

I really hope it's not the case of us being unable to compete even for the players from the likes of Crewe if we're relegated

We'll easily be able to draw top players from the lower leagues, like Blackburn did with Rhodes. Whether we will be willing to pay fees like that is another question entirely.

To extend the conversation, the problem with Saber ideas is football is the subjective nature of any useful stat. Con's favorite "key passes" stat, for instance, relies on a person deciding which passes are key and which are not. In baseball, however, you have either gotten on base or not. No subjectivity needed.

It's not subjective. You don't understand how it works.

A key pass is that which would have been an assist if the shot at goal had gone in. So a key pass results in a shot at goal.

I'll repeat myself: Lies, damn lies and statistics.*

*Not claiming these words are mine.

How exactly does this win any argument?

Van Persie has scored a lot of goals this season. "Lies, damned lies and statistics."

What if a players passes the ball 2 yards back to a player who shoots from 40 yards out which the keeper catches easily.

According to your definition that 2 yard backwards pass is a key pass.

He bought 4 from the lower leagues and huge success is a slight exaggeration.

It's an objectively derived statistic so that would be a key pass.

It's inevitable that a proportion of key passes will be uncreative like this, just as a proportion of assists will be like this.

Ashley Westwood's assist for Brett Holman's goal against Fulham was a short pass backwards.

That doesn't make the 'assist' statistic any less meaningful but obviously there are hard and easy assists.

We should not forget though that sometimes the clever pass is the short one sideways to the long shot specialist, so we should not automatically dismiss uncreative key passes/assists as unimportant.

That isn't what I said, you complete cretin. You completely ignored what I actually said. And, wow, because this year I get my first ST because of financial constraints and that becomes a reason to disregard my opinion? Like I haven't been going to individual games since I was 3 or 4?

It's an opinion that you state over and over and over again without any sort of rationale or reasoning. Then when you're challenged, you don't even have a **** response. Like now.

So what you're saying here is that you can't just view a stat, you have to look at the situation in which the stat was gained.

I think that's what everyone has been saying to you for months.
