I don't see anyone in the Democratic ranks who is going to persuade the people that switched from Obama to Trump to switch back.

Certainly not someone who can have the word 'socialist' hurled at him, whose response is 'not that kind of socialist', who also isn't a fan of Israel, and is Jewish but not really religious. Ain't happening.

I mean I like the guy, but Sanders chance at being in the Oval Office next year is basically nil. Trump will get his second term.

a] He wouldn't necessarily need to win back the people that switched from Obama to Trump (there are obviously lots of different ways in which you can build an election-winning coalition)

b] Being 'not a fan of Israel' is unlikely to matter, since hardly anybody votes on foreign policy, and anyone who votes based on pure love of Israel will be voting Republican no matter what

c] His chances, once again, are not 'basically nil'.

There's a poll out today or yesterday that says Democrats in Texas (I know) prefer to see the word Socialist rather than Capitalist

Here it is... also California

I would certainly expect it would easier to try to win back former Democrat voters than on hopes on increasing turnouts.

His position on Israel I mention less as a first order reason for voters to not support Sanders, but more that it's going to be another attack line to push people against him in the inevitable death by a thousand cuts tactic that will come if he is the candidate. It'll be another avenue of critique to go along with 'socialism', and budgets, and incredulity at his social reform plans and associated costs, and etc etc etc.

And of course there's a chance for a Democratic win. I'm not speaking literally. It's obviously an opinion. In my opinion it's exceedingly unlikely a Democratic candidate will win the election.

Those aren't the only two ways (you could also benefit from the other side's turnout decreasing more, or your side winning over more of a different group of voters). However, this seems to be less of an opinion than an irritable gesture at this point, so I'll leave it there.

No one has an idea how the CoVID-19 outbreak is going to affect things either, the response from the Trump Govt so far seems... like it'll kill a lot of his base

Yup, heard it referred to as Trump's Katrina earlier this morning, lot's of potential in that one.

A virus like this is more likely to impact those living in cities than in rural areas so I would have thought it would disproportionately impact Democrat voters over Republicans.

Sanders beats Trump in current national polling.

Gen Z and Millennial voters of a more diverse racial background have sussed out the bullshit better than Gen X and Boomers ever did.

Latest stats out this morn showing Fox news steaming ahead in the ratings war, with both CNN/MSNBC suffering. Likely says more about demographics than anything else, but worth bearing in mind that echo chambers work on both sides.

Sanders wasn't close to winning the race 4 years ago so I don't exactly get your point!

He was beating/competing with Trump/A.N.Other in polls both in primary season and of course polls done after the disaster that was the Clinton campaign. The after the fact are of course biased, but just trying to point out that he has been polling well for years, not that it makes any difference whatsoever to those in control at the DNC.
