sharkyvilla
I'm surprised he's gone for two up top, maybe he feels it's worth throwing caution to the wind. He's said he goes into all games thinking he can win. However I struggle to see anything but Newcastle domination for 90 minutes.
andym
good to have lichaj at left back. he did fine there last season and has a knack for getting forward which is what we need. but surprised with the midfield though, another bold selection. i worry it is too weak
The_Steve
Good job N'Zogbia isn't playing. Doesn't offer any protection for the full back.
OutByEaster? Posted September 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted September 2, 2012 He did the right thing putting Lichaj at LB, we need some pace at fullback to keep up with their wingers. I think he's done the right thing as Lichaj is a better full back than either Clark or Baker, even if he is right footed; but he's got no pace at all. Indeed, compared to other PL fullbacks he is quite slow. Compared to our fullbacks however, he is behind Lowton & Bennett with the most speed. Baker did a decent job at FB against the Hammers but against Everton I felt he came to far infield and left alot of space on the touchline. Baker is definitely not a full back, I think he gets put out there because he's left footed - Clark's problem is that physically he's neither quick enough for full back or big enough for centre back. Lichaj is our best option at the moment, hopefully Bennett proves to be a player.
switters
Gabby on the bench? Didn't realize he was gonna be back already. Bold team. We really can't afford to go behind early or I'd fear a thrashing.
The_Steve
I know Lichaj isn't quick but he's adventurous and gets forward. That's certainly what Lambert wants most, attacking full backs.
dudevillaisnice
Think we'll be chasing the ball for most if not all the game, too many passengers in that XI.
Daweii
This is going to be an exciting game. I gotta say I'm loving this I really am, the adrenaline that flows before a Villa match is such a rush I don't think I'd trade it for anything.. I'm hoping a 2-1 win for Villa but we all know Cisse is going to destroy us.

KSV
Hes probably thinking.. i will play my best ball players.. who can keep possession... we keep the ball.. we wont have to defend too much..
sonic_bouma
Guttierez, Cabaye, Tiote/Anita are all very physical players... Ireland and Bannan i fear will get steamrollered
OutByEaster? Posted September 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted September 2, 2012 If today's selection (and the season so far) is about keeping the ball, then I reckon we'll need about 99% of the possession to win this one today. I'm nervous about how that team will deal with Newcastle on the ball.

I can El Ahmadi & Bannan holding in midfield, worried we don't have enough bite with both of them being there though. Would loved to have seen Westwood on the bench, understandable though due to no PL experience. Surprised Herd was left out aswell, could've gave us abit of protection in the second half when Bannan inevitably gets subbed.

AshVilla
Were going to get murdered I don't know if its a case of bring brave from Lambert and going 4-4-2 at newcastle or a case of being foolish Why is bannan in the team he's dogshit
OutByEaster? Posted September 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted September 2, 2012 I've no problem with Bannan in the side - would've liked to see Delph or Herd for Holman as they add a bit more much needed bite, I'm guessing they both have knocks and I don't think Westwood was signed in time. Newcastle have midfielders who can run with the ball and I worry about the power we have in midfield on the run.
lmarsha_926
Kind of funny we are debating Clark when he is the most experienced CB available in terms of PL games and some are worried we lack PL experience in the team.
jonno_2004
Christ, looks like a Graham Taylor Mk. II team. No width and no bite in midfield. Bannan can run the show against Tranmere but away from home against a team we haven't beat on their own patch in years? I don't think so. I like Lambert but his selections are really beginning to worry me.
Alpaywasawesome
What's all this talk about Lichaj having no pace? Did everyone forget the game against spurs where he matched Bale run after run down the flank?
