Jimmy Savile And Other Paedophiles

LondonLax I think you've missed where MakemineVanilla is coming from. Ignoring Savile for a minute, no comparison was being made between him & McMurphy. The question was solely on whether today's audience would be as sympathetic towards Nicholson's character's plight as the audience was back in 1975. MakemineVanilla suggests it probably wouldn't be.

Thanks, that is exactly my point.

Very true DDID and there is an area where the law; being rigid and inflexible in its nature which is understandable; becomes almost insufficient in dealing with the very borderline stuff where a soon-to-be 16 year old girl has an older boyfriend (I don't mean stupidly old, just older than her). Where he is breaking the law. Mental maturity varies quite a lot from person to person at that age (15-17) and those are the cases where society (i.e. morality) can sometimes have an opinion that goes against the law of the land. In his specific case though, he was 1) probably too old for her and 2) being the teacher made it an absolute no-no.

Its a thin line though isn't it. Although none of us agree with what villaguy has posted he's still only posting his opinions, Its not a crime as far as I know to have an opinion.

The line has definitely got thinner.

The debate has become impossible because failure to participate in the moral panic comes with a lot of risks.

The question I am curious about is whether an audience's response to the plight of the McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) character in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest has changed in these post-Savile times?

In the film/book he is put in the mental institution because he (statuary) raped a 15 year-old girl.

Back in 1975 his punishment was considered harsh and the audience was sympathetic.

So now that attitudes have shifted, do we now think that McMurphy got what he deserved?

Interesting question! In some countries the age of consent is 15 so it would be acceptable in those countries but not America. Bill Wyman was having sex with Mandy Smith when she was 13 yet the police aren't interested in prosecuting him! why??

In answer to your question no! not a mental institution but yes some form of custodial sentence.

Back then attitudes were somewhat different, they are most definitely more hardline now. I think back then as no complaint was made to the Police and it was a relationship clearly undertaken with parental consent so nothing was done. I somehow feel if that was to happen right now, arrests would be made and interventions would be made on Smiths behalf by third party agencies, I wasn't aware that such organisations existed back then.

and they can't go charge him now for unlawful sex even though it was still against the law at the time. Strange one really as they are prosecuting other people for offences committed during a similar period. I read that he rang the police to see if he would have problems and they said no. Unless she has to be the one that brings charges.

I'm sure his (Wyman) celebrity had something to do with police looking the other way. Pete Townsend as well...

Yes although it hasn't protected other celebs. Was Townsend caught accessing a child porn site and got away with it because he claimed it was for research?

Having looked into that it may be the case he wasn't accessing child porn at all, something to do with his credit card.

Yes his story does seem a little far-fetched but they couldn't find any indecent images or that he had actually accessed the site he had paid for by credit card. Not too difficult for to remove all traces but he has to be given the benefit of the doubt.

Unless you're an IT pro, it's pretty difficult to remove traces.

I think he thought about it, and changed his mind. He's got issues, as anybody familiar with his life story will know, but on this one I believe him.

Yes that's very likely.
