Tegis Posted May 4, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted May 4, 2014 I'm resurrecting this thread for a bit of watch porn. The Patek Philippe Calatrava, rail dial in white gold!! Did well on the horses I see.

theboyangel
haven't worn a watch for around 4 years now. Never really seen the point of splashing out lots of cash on a timepiece.
CVByrne
That Patek is absolutely magnificent you jammy git. I need to move a few pieces on. My latest addition is the Omega black ceramic Dark Side of the Moon, which to my mind is a great piece http://www.omegawatches.com/collection/speedmaster/moonwatch/presentation/speedmaster-dark-side-of-the-moon I've also got a stainless steel Daytona (white face), a Breguet Marine and a Glashutte Original, which cover most bases. The pieces I'm going to sell on are a Breitling Navitimer, my earlier Omega Speedmaster, and a Nomos Glashutte Ahoj. Don't think they'll get me into Patek territory though.... I love that Omega Dark Side of the moon. Also the White Faced Daytona is gorgeous too. I'm going to get one next, but the Zenith Daytona in White Gold. I also really like your Glashutte Original. I'm not a huge Breguet fan. While I can see the merit in rationalising the remainder. What are you going to aquire then? I thought the time was right to get the Grail watch and that Calatrava is just stunning. I had to offload the Omega AT & Rolex Milgauss and add to my seasons horse racing winnings (it was an up and down season tbh) to get it. Took forever to find one as there was one for sale in a shop on Bond street but it had no papers so couldn’t buy it. Managed to find a private seller who was offloading to get the even filthier Aquanaut. Next up in this summers merry go round is offloading the JLC Master Chronograph, Panerai PAM112 and the stainless steel bracelet for my Navi world to get a white faced Zenith Daytona probably - in white gold - I prefer the dial on that model to the newer ones with the Rolex in house movement, plus it’ll probably be more collectable in the future as the El Primero is one of the all time classic movements. There are rumours the Daytona bubble is bursting slightly, there was an Authorised Dealer selling a new one at RRP in Scotland. So much for the 5 year waiting list!! Risso
I'd love a Patek. Just about the only remaining family owned manufacture, with almost every other high end Swiss and German manufacture owned by one of the big groups like Swatch. There's a real sense of history to the name as well, so I'll probably keep my powder dry until I can afford one. In other watch-related news, I've got 40 watchmakers and horologists (including Roger Smith and the UK boss of Patek) coming to my house tomorrow. Risso
So how did it go? Absolutely magnificent thanks mate, the sort of day that a watch geek will never forget. Over 40 watch and clock makers, including the Senior Horologist of the Greenwich Royal Observatory. Got to hold the £1.3m George Daniels watch, and looked around Roger Smith's workshop. Alas, no freebies! More details and photos on the other site.

thetrees
Tried on the IWC Portofino Chronograph on Saturday. Way too big for my puny wrists. Not too sure whether to go for the straight Portofino, nice and simple, but quite beautiful. Or something else. Any watch fiends suggest anything in the less than £5k bracket? Risso
Wow, that's easily the best looking one I've seen. I'm just very, very suspicious about all these kickstarter watches though. They always seem to have massive delays (Omate) or it's doubtful if they even exist at all (Hyetis Crossbow)

You must have wrist like Keira Knightley, that's only a 42mm case. So assuming you want some something similar, ie a classier looking chronograph rather than a sporty model, in under 42mm, what about the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Chronograph? 40mm case: http://www.swisswatchesdirect.co.uk/watch/q1538420_jaeger-lecoultre_mens_watches_master_chronograph?gclid=CNn9wOPyuL4CFYoSwwod428A8Q But hang on, haven't you got one of those horrible Panerai things Surely they're all at least 47mm and much bigger than that IWC? Sorry, was reading on my Blackberry and somehow thought you were CV! If you like IWCs, then go for the Portuguese Chronograph. The case is 41mm, which doesn't sound a lot but it will feel smaller. I think it's nicer than the Portofino as it happens.

Is that the in house manual wind? I love that watch and am down to buy it from someone on TZ forums if/when he sells it. I wouldn't go with the regular Portofino nor the Portuguese. For the 5k mark you need to be getting in house movement imo. Go look at a near new Jagaer Le-Coultre Master, they are phenomenal quality pieces. You want a sports watch or a more dressy watch? But being a bit of an all rounder at the same time?

Haha just reading this. I have just recommended the JLC and no, I sold the Panerai for price it cost to buy. No me gusta I have a bloody 46mm Navi World which is fine on my (smallish 6.75 inch) wrist. I also sold my JLC Master Chrono (pics below from sale corner on TZ) as I'm replacing it with a bit more of an all rounder. Yep I'm getting a Daytona, modern SS one
