magnkarl
What would happen to Hezbollah, ISIS, Hamas, Muslim brotherhood etc. if Qatar were to comply with the demands? From what I gather around 80% of the funding for sunni extreme organisations are in some shape or form from Qatari money. Would Iran have enough money to keep up the funding of the groups that it is not fighting? Edited June 23, 2017 by magnkarl

Would Iran have enough money to keep up the funding of the groups that it is not fighting? Qatari nationals are involved in funding these groups but it's very difficult to prove whether the government is directly involved or not. The same is true of rich Conservative Muslims in UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and chiefly, Saudi Arabia. The bait and switch number these countries have pulled by blaming Qatar is to distract Trump's attention from their own extensive guilt, with the corollary benefit being a potential chance to loot Qatar and stamp out an independently minded political rival. They wouldn't have embarked on this course without the nod from Trump on his recent trip (who knows what they promised him in return) but if Saudi & UAE attack Qatar it will pull in Turkey, Iran, Egypt, maybe Pakistan plus major non-regional powers. Qatar supplies half the world with natural gas which makes it a systemically significant player.

snowychap
Yemen cholera cases 'pass 200,000' Quote The number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen has now exceeded 200,000, the United Nations says. The joint statement by Unicef and the World Health Organization said the country was now facing the worst cholera outbreak anywhere in the world. The two UN agencies say they are doing everything they can to stop the outbreak from accelerating. So far more than 1,300 people have died - one quarter of them children - with the death toll expected to rise. "In just two months, cholera has spread to almost every governorate of this war-torn country," the statement says, with an estimated 5,000 new cases every day. ...more on link

'Speaking at a joint news conference with representatives of the United NationsChildren Fund and the World Bank, Zagaria said there had been 246,000 suspected cases up to 30 June. Although most of Yemen’s health infrastructure has broken down and health workers have not been paid for more than six months, the WHO is paying “incentives” to doctors, nurses, cleaners and paramedics to staff an emergency cholera network.' https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jul/02/yemens-cholera-death-toll-rises-to-1500-says-world-health-organisation Periodic reminder for those who don't know that our government is helping to cause this humanitarian crisis by providing logistical support to the Saudi military blockade of the country. In two years since the beginning of the blockade, it has totally failed in any of its initial objectives, the most obvious of which is that the Houthis still control Sana'a. Two years of utterly futile suffering.

Qatar owns more of our capital than any other group or individual - more than the Queen, more than transport for London. There's something oddly complicated about trying to predict the path of disputes or wars between people that own loads of your stuff.
snowychap
Egypt mosque attack: At least 184 killed in Sinai Quote Suspected militants have launched a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt's North Sinai province, killing at least 184 people, state media say. Witnesses say the al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed, near al-Arish, was targeted during Friday prayers. Local police said men in four off-road vehicles opened fire on worshippers, AP reported. Egypt has been fighting an Islamist insurgency in the region, which has intensified since 2013. There have been regular attacks blamed on militants on the Sinai peninsula, but this is the deadliest assault of its kind. Pictures from the scene show rows of bloodied victims inside the mosque. At least 125 people were also wounded, reports say. ...more on link

OutByEaster? Posted December 2, 2017 Moderator Share Posted December 2, 2017 Nice to see that the Israeli's have decided that the best thing for Syria is if they join in with the bombing. Anything that puts the Saudis and Israelis on the same side is inherently ropey in my opinion. The world is a bit crap today.
OutByEaster? Posted December 6, 2017 Moderator Share Posted December 6, 2017 Trump seems to have decided that the Middle East has been a bit quiet of late. Reclassifying Jerusalem is not going down well with the Saudis. Or the Egyptians, or the Jordanians, or Turkey, or Qatar, Or France, or Germany or...well anyone that's not Israel. What could possibly go wrong?
