You could tell he was a little rusty yesterday but still did ok.

I think a midfield central 3 is the way to go in future, particularly in away games / games against the better teams. Any 3 from Petrov, Makoun, Delph and NRC would be the way i'd go against Liverpool.

Alec, I wouldn't disagree with you, in that I would like to see him in a three. Although, I do not recollect much of this:

He's tended to look overwhelmed at times in a central two, whether that be alongside Petrov or Reo-Coker, and the team as a whole has looked lightweight. Play him in a central three though and he can really be an asset.

In a two he has been predominantly alongside Stan. I am struggling to remember him in a two with NRC?

I see him as the playmaker alongside a DCM and an ACM, as he was against Man U at home last year with Stan and Jimmy alongside. Only problem is I also see Makoun and Bannan as this type of player?

I think he played alongside NRC against Spurs on Boxing Day - admittedly can't think of any other occasions.

I agree that Bannan would also get much more of a chance to influence games as part of a three so with current personnel it would certainly seem that 4-3-3 / 4-3-2-1 is the way to go.

Our future is bright for sure. Definitely need an enforcer of a DM though so that we can be a bit more free to try our Youth as they come through. I am positive that if they can continue with their progress and remain injury free (which will be tough considering their big injuries so early)

will be a fantastic midfield for us. Just hope they can progress as we hope

He got caught out a few times yesterday but it was usually whilst trying something positive , i.e. a forward pass or trying to take someone on, which for me was a great sign . He'll be a Holte End hero in no time at all I'm certain.

I agree.

Somebody like Orlando Engelaar (a VERY big bastard) would be a gfreat signing for us. Hes getting on a bit now (31 i think) but he should be pretty cheap and could do a job for a year or two

FABIAN Delph is targeting a productive pre-season to stake a strong claim for 2011-12 after his winning return at Arsenal whet his appetite for first-team football.

Delph played an important part in Villa’s surprise 2-1 success story at the Emirates on Sunday and ran Darren Bent close for the claret and blues’ man of the match.

It was only the Yorkshire youngster’s fourth start of the season, along with three substitute appearances, and his first action since stepping off the bench against Wolves in March.

Delph was delighted to be employed in his specialist central midfield position at the Emirates after being used as a fill-in left-back previously this season.

The 21-year-old has endured a stop-start career at Villa after being used sparingly last season before suffering a cruciate ligament injury last April.

But after signing a new four-year contract two months ago, Delph is determined to start justifying the £5 million Villa paid Leeds in summer 2009.

Delph is hoping to keep his place in midfield for Sunday’s Premier League finale at home to Liverpool.

“I was delighted with my own performance and that of the team too,” he said.

“To contribute to a win at Arsenal meant the world to me.

“I need to get a really good pre-season – injury-free – under my belt and then see what I can do after that.

“We’ve had a frustrating season so it would be nice to get the right result against Liverpool to add to Arsenal and send the fans home happy for the summer.”

Gary McAllister’s tactics paid off with Delph joining Stiliyan Petrov and Nigel Reo-Coker in a three-pronged central midfield to try to deny Arsenal space.

The combative England under-21 star thanked his senior colleagues for helping him cope with the demands after his recent lack of competitive football.

“We had experienced players in there like Nigel and Stiliyan who guided me through it easily,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say I found it difficult but I haven’t played a lot of football this season or for the past two years.

“It took me a bit of time to get into it but those players were superb beside me, guiding me through.

“The lads spoke before the game and said ‘come on, we’ve got nothing to lose’. We gave it a really good go, got two up early on and we were delighted to win.”

Delph also saluted Villa’s travelling fans at Arsenal and joked that their fancy dress costumes – and lack of them – did not distract him.

“They were absolutely tremendous,” he added. “They had their tops off and everything. Don’t worry, that didn’t put me off!

“There were a few big-uns in the crowd though. They were really, really loud.”

Lad.

Havn't seen enough of him to be sure.

Don't see yet what some do who are more convinced than me.

Thought his presence at Arsenal was instrumental in the win and was impressed overall with his contribution.

Why was he subbed yesterday?

Is he injured?

He got a tackle from being from the thug of Liverpool CB - Skrtl - who always seems to get away with murder and never picks up bookings.

He was relatively ineffectual beforehand because all three of the CM's picked basically play defensive positions - they were virtually standing on each others toes - and there wasn't a great deal of depth to our CM.

I think he will be class if the team is set up in the right way.
