They have got a huge job on their hands sorting out the mess Labour have left behind again.

This kind of thing gets said every time a government changes hands from one outdated concept to the next

Yep, usually it goes like this....

"They spent all the money and left us in shit"

and the other one goes

"They destroyed public services and left us in shit"

Well I agree with point one, not sure you could level point two at Labour though.

Maybe that one can be used against the Tories when they get voted out.....

That was the point he was making!

Strangely the same point I was making as well.......

Big kick in the teeth for Liam Fox in defence, apparently Paddy Ashdown will take on the role of Defence Secretary.

If that's the case, a very sensible appointment.

We will have gone from the least qualified defence secretary to the most qualified defence secretary in one fell swoop.

I disagree, Paddy was undoubtedly a good soldier once but that doesn't mean his knowledge is current. Fox has spent a number of years engaging with the very difficult issues facing the Armed Forces across the board and is therefore undoubtedly better prepared for the role.

It's the same argument that being a footballer doesn't necessarily then make you a better football manager. I'd imagine many in Main Building and beyond are highly pissed off about this tonight.

Part of me is happy for Cameron himself, he's had a tough year and remained strong. Put the party bollocks aside and hes done his family proud.

He's an arrogant word removed. More shitty news on this crappy day...

The Chinese have so much invested in the US that the dollar will be secured for a long time yet.

Isn't the problem though when the Chinese come knocking asking for their money back the worlds finances will go back into the shitter though? I might have misunderstood the situation though.

Then again if that does happen I predict a lot more than a few bankers faffing about with notes :P

I'll bow to your greater knowledge on that one, but the other person that I was referring to was Bob Ainsworth.

Well lets all hope that history repeats itself and Villa can have the same kind of success they had the last time the tories took over from labour.

Labour had better get their arses in gear because if some people are right about this they wont have long to re-group before we are back to the polls.

If they are wrong and this does work it could be a great government that could see a big change in the political arena for some time to come.

They have got a huge job on their hands sorting out the mess Labour have left behind again.

The mess the Tories left from the 70s/80s is still here as well.

Care to enlighten us?

Look at the North East of England, that is still feeling the effects of Thatcher.

It was hardly a shining example of prosperity before Thatcher came in though was it.

Shipbuilding died because they were other countries building ships cheaper.

Mining was a pawn in the Thatcher / Scargill battle but again was being effected because coal could be bought cheaper elsewhere.

How long did Labour need to make a difference up there?

I guess it's like the banks.

When the numbers become so enormous there is no point in knocking. You just have to work out a way of sorting it over time.

China is the biggest manufacturer, the US the biggest consumer, so i'm sure they will always work things out.

Only my guess about reaction to Paddy, but Ainsworth.. well, nuff said.

EDIT: A better place for Ashdown imo would have been a new post basically along the lines of Minister for Afghanistan. He could have deployed his massive foreign affairs experience in tandem with Fox as the Def Sec. addressing the broader picture.

As Paddy was apparently one of the Lib Dems holding back a coalition deal perhaps this was his price (and they've all got one)?

You mean that 13 years of Labour couldn't clean it up?

A damning indictment of the Labour party and socialist policies in general if that's the case.

they've made it worse.

The one point I've agreed with you tonight. Osborne should have been sacrificed as art of the negotiations. Ken Clark as Chancellor FTW.

Would've prefered if they somehow snuck Portillo in through the back door! Clark wouldn't be a bad choice though.

Yes, I read something about Portillo being something of a backdoor man, but perhaps that is just in his youth.

I've actually got a lot of time for Portillo, he is one smart mother ****. If you watch him on This Week with Andrew Neill and Dianne Abbott you come to realise he is usually correct. I would welcome him as part of the new government but I suspect he is now more comfortable being a backroom adviser.

Cameron needs to be ruthless and **** Osborne off.

Exactly!!

Again we talk of the wonders of this big world and we should all be involved in it but then complain when we go into the big world to buy stuff cheaper, this is why we dont have the industry.

The reason for this is in this country we make and do expensive things very well, sadly we make cheap things very badly. I know I will probably get shouted down for this comment but sadly its true!!

Agreed, Clark is head and shoulders the best candidate for the Treasury. Has Osborne's appointment not already been confirmed though?

OK, maybe when you stopped celebrating you'll see you misunderstood his post in the first place, either that or your not very good at making the points you make. Either way, your problem

It's strange how people were saying that it would be imoral for Gordon Brown to try to form a new government having only finished second in the election, yet now we face the prospect of Mr third place being deputy Prime minister. Funny old world we live in (not). And by the way I voted Lib Dem as a tactical vote because the Tories have such a hold in my area.

Calm down son, you can't keep this up for four years without getting banned.

I'm just expressing myself.

So everyone who voted Conservative is a pig?

Nice.
