The Spanish Football/la Liga Thread

Yes quite a few sides have given Barcelona a good game lately. I used to think 'No Messi is not as good as Pele or Maradonna as they have won world cups' but I think now he's probably better. George Best was also living art on a football pitch but never played in a  world cup finals.

Trophies can only be used to measure a player's career not actually how good they are at football.

Yes but if you are the star of a world cup winning side like Pele was twice out of the three wins, Maradona was in 86 then that does count for a lot I think.

Its also frightening how many goals the trident have scored between them since they played together. its over 200 in little over a year, maybe 15 months, but Suarez was banned for a large part of last season and Messi injured this season.

It's frightening that Messi keeps finding ways to get better.  His free kicks this season have been insane, I think that was his sixth or seventh goal and he has hit the bar a few times as well.

With all the useless stats that the likes of Opta produce, I can never understand why more attention isn't paid to direct attempts on goals from free kicks which are always considerably less dangerous than everyone thinks. The very best at free kicks have only ever managed 1 goal per 12 or 13 attempts, and sure enough that's the case now with Messi. His last 100 attempts have produced 8 goals.

Stevo is right though. Cristiano Ronaldo is the most over-rated taker of free kicks since,,, well, Roberto Carlos. In his last 100 attempts he's only scored three. That's the same success rate you'd expect as scoring from a corner (obviously not directly), but even the best at free kicks can only make them twice as dangerous as corner.

Ronaldo has always been crap at free kicks, even when he was at United I was saying the same thing.

Scores to odd screamer, but 95% of them go into the wall or over the bar.

Sky used to cream over him as a free-kick specialist when he got 1 in about 30. worst was he got a cracker against Portsmouth using a technique Del Piero used and then he got one in Champions League and Richard Keys said he must have been studying Ronaldo

Yeah I remember Keys saying that! I nearly spat my drink out. Del Piero was taking free kicks when Ronaldo was still in nappies!

Sevilla still can't win away in La Liga....conceded late goal to Getafe who've lost last 6 I think.

Anyone who watches them on a regular basis have a clue why that is as they have a very talented group of players and are quite physically strong, also got a bit of pace on the counter, am a bit bemused tbh and they have Real Madrid away next aswell.

Ronaldo looked lethal yesterday, hitting form now at the right time of the season

I also think he knows this will be his last chance to win an international tournament so is gearing himself to that

Cherseyev's been a really good pick up for Valencia.....pretty much the main reason for their upturn in form as he's scored some crucial goals in the last month. Good player who got lost in the system at Real Madrid. Wonder if they'll be some premier league interest in him in the summer?

Griezmann just scored his 16th of the season aswell.

2 goals in an Atletico Madrid match already!
