VILLAFC2000
Keyboard chewed by puppy about 6 months ago so "a" and "i" now both a bit temperamental - leading to "odd and meaningless" posts. The dog ate my homework? I'd have thought you were a little old for that now? Can't you just get back to slandering Risso for working in financial services? Oh, ok. Financial "services". The foundation of a sound economy. Or.. "Socialism. The foundation of a humourless man". Nothing wrong with Socialism to a degree - Although you do have to understand it in the first place. The foundation of a sound economy. I work for a diverse group that includes financial services, e-commerce and traditional manufacturing businesses. All are extremely profitable, all are growing, all have taken on lots of new staff in the last two years. As a group we make a large contribution to the economies of both the UK and the IOM. We pay less tax over here of course, but as long as the IOM government collects in enough to run what it needs to, that's no business of anybody in the UK. We also have an investment company that provides private equity for new ventures. I'm much happier being an accountant for a successful business than I would be for some bloodsucking quango or not-for-profit organisation. I can see why you would dislike regulators ("quangoes"), but I don't quite follow the hatred of not-for-profits. Is profit such a holy grail for you that anyone who doesn't seek it is by definition a heretic?

peterms
Food prices have increased faster than inflation in lots of places. Rising energy prices play a part, as does the increasing use of biofuels and commodity price speculation. It's going to get worse. Poorer people will be hit hardest, spending a larger part of household income on food.

It's the speculators driving food prices which then makes them richer, not food prices eating into their investments.
LondonLax
The food price inflation is a lot to do with the devaluation of the pound. The UK imports a lot of food (or grain/fertilizer etc to make food or oil/petrol to transport food) and it costs a lot more when the pound is worth a third less than it used to be.
