Win Europa League 100%. European final, travelling around Europe and silverware. CL is all well and good but we've time to get there and does very little for you if you get knocked out early. Look at some of the teams that have played in it over the last few years (Newcastle, Spurs, Leicester). They don't seem to have benefited from it.

Take it a step further because the question needs more context… Question to Villa fans Would you rather get to play in the Champions League and not win but keep all key players and get CL place next season as well. Or sell Watkins for £100m to Arsenal this summer, win the Europa League Trophy, and finish 10th.
Popular Post StefanAVFC
We win the EL, we end up in the CL anyway so it's a no brainer.

They went from mid-table team in 90s and 00s to having revenue that can challenge United and Liverpool. That is insanity what CL did for Spurs. And now with the new FFP rules that set wages in the club based on revenue earned Spurs are in fantastic position to actually achieve something in coming years. In big part thanks to multiple CL qualifications in 10s.

Newcastle and Spurs definitely benefited from it, they wouldn’t have been able to spend like they did in the summer and attract Tonali (the transfer not working out so far is by the by) whereas likely have had to sell somebody like Isak had they not qualified for champions league due to FFP. Spurs have regularly benefitted from the financials from Champions League, the fact their recruitment has been poor until this summer just gone is their fault. The Champions League money is why the big six are the big six and only by bad recruitment and decisions is why they aren’t top 6. 1
Rodders
Trophy cabinet lists trophies. Doesn't list finishing 4th. But getting worked up by hypotheticals is very daft. Obviously. You'd have to be insane to be genuinely annoyed by someone selecting what you perceive to be the wrong option

All have benefited, Leicester just didn’t have the consistency, had they qualified two times they were near, it would’ve been different. Spurs has been a top 6 club just because they featured a lot there, otherwise they’ve won nothing. Newcastle has been helped financially and players/people are recognizing them as a project going forward.

Last season I wanted ECL more than EL because of the chances of winning it. But who’s to say we’ll win? Now we’re almost there, but even if we went to the final nothing is guaranteed. For me I’d say winning Europa is better than getting out from the first stage in CL (if it was the old way I’d look at entering CL then get 3rd and join Europa). However, nothing is guaranteed, so getting to CL is a guaranteed success, good financially, showing the project to everyone. Especially if we can win ECL this season, that would do for trophies for now.

I just think the original question, just like the 4th vs ECL question lacks why many of us think 4th is a priority, it was not about short term but potentially long term reasoning. My worry is that they could easily beat Arsenal in the derby game. If they do, that’s Arsenal’s title push probably over and Liverpool don’t look like they are able to keep on winning. If man city win the league before they play spurs that game becomes a gimme for spurs. And they already have the 2 gimmes v sheff united and burnley. Two wins still needed for me. Spurs v Arsenal is huge. Oh apologies sorry yeah not the final day but yeah Spurs will cause an upset here and thats where there will be a huge twist in the title race, hopefully we can do our business so it wont affect us fingers crossed And they will certainly beat sheff utd on final day

They are more than capable of beating these teams at home, please don't think the job is done. Especially now when they’re fighting to finish in top four, this is why it is important we go all out in every remaining fixture, i dont have a great feeling about the Chelsea match but for some reason feel more optimistic when we face Liverpool which is odd as we never really come out successfully against the latter. See this statement we have time to get there is dangerous, it is difficult to get into top four extremely, so if you are within touching distance then you take it because the opportunity does not come around often there are too many super clubs however worst case scenario could be we would be eliminated from UCL early but drop into Europa and win it from there that way you get the best of both worlds, this manager we have brought Villareal to the semis of UCL anything is possible in which case. There's no dropping to UEL anymore in the new format, but it's far likelier to qualify into playoff rounds with 24 teams going through. Basically the teams that would end up 3rd and move to UEL will move through next phase in CL. Edited April 23 by Alakagom
