Hitting send - to the wrong person

Back in the days of the Villa email list, one of the subscribers was a certain club employee (who shall remain nameless). I was having an off-list email correspondence with another listmember, in which I described said employee in, shall we say, less than flattering terms. In the classic fashion, I mistakenly pressed 'reply to all'. Oops.

Well, at least he found out what some of us thought of him...

What's the best / worst / funniest thing you've accidentally sent to the wrong person, and what were the consequences?

I haven’t sent one in error.

However, in my first job there was a trial period where new starters had to meet certain standards to be a permanent member of the team.

A colleague (now friend of mine) hadn’t met this standard and his trial period was being extended. We found this out as everyone else in the team received an e-mail telling us this which was intended for various line managers. At the time of this e-mail, my friend was in a team training session, so essentially everyone else knew and he was in the dark. Apologies were made, etc etc…

Incidentally, he was there for a couple of years and eventually handed his notice in. On his last day, he jumped on someone else’s computer and sent a joke internal e-mail to various staff as that person. My mate was escorted off the premises for that one.

Not an e-mail, but at another job my line manager asked me to type out this hand written table which was essentially different options for the organisation to save money. This was something her line manager had written out.

About half way down the table the cessation of my role was listed as a possible way of saving money.

My line manager came back into my office after about 5 minutes  - “Erm, could I have that back?”.

“I’ve already seen it.”

“Ok, erm…well, just hold on.”

A few minutes later her line manager sheepishly comes in and apologises, just exploring different options, etc etc. FWIW I didn’t lose my job. How much of that was due to that awkward encounter, I’ll never know.

Not me but my boss.

The PA of one of our senior managers in London, a seriously attractive young Asian lady was getting married to someone in Wolverhampton so moved up here with the intention of keeping her job working remotely.

Our office had recently had a couple of redundancies so the atmosphere wasn't exactly brilliant at the time.

Anyway, this girl didn't seem to have any work to do so just spent most of the day just sat there, doing her nails, quite frequently leaning back in her chair reading a book.   She never once asked if there was anything she could do to help out.

People got annoyed and moaned to my boss.

He sent a long email to her boss detailing how inappropriate it was, ending up saying "even as I look over at her now she's reading her book again"

He hit send and and immediately heard her email notification ping as he received an out of office from her boss saying his PA would review his Emails.

She looked up at him, put her book in her bag and walked out of the office never to be seen again.

I've received a text not meant for me, from my sister during a particularly stressful time whilst looking after my parents.

I was having to make some very difficult decisions with little or no feedback. After one big decision was made I had messaged her to say what I'd decided to do.

A little bit later I was driving with the other half to run some errands for folks and my phone pinged, I told the missus to open and read it.

She said, oh its from your sister and it starts MY BASTARD BROTHER

obviously it wasn't meant for me, I was seething and almost crashed the car.

There is a back story to this which made it unforgiveable for a very long time

I did it at work many moons ago in one of my first office jobs.

We had one of the Account Managers visiting us (did so probably once a month or so) and he was sat amongst all us lowly minions and was going on about a holiday he’d just got back from. I sent an email to my mate sat directly opposite me saying something like ‘yeah yeah bore off Martin, no one gives a shit about your holiday’ and of course proceeded to then send it to Martin and not my matey opposite.

Cue panic attack and a fumbled attempt to make it seem like I’d intended to send it to him as a joke.

Lesson learned tho, always double check who I’m sending to every time since.

On a lighter note, I've slagged people off to their faces without knowing who they were. (I've done that a few times).

I've messaged a lady slating another lady but sent it to the lady I was slating.

My foot has spent most of its life in my mouth and its too late to change that now

Microsoft Teams is deadly for slagging off folk especially when you have multiple chats ongoing as I've found to my misfortune; luckily it wasn't a big insult neither was bad language used so I just about blagged it to the person concerned as bantz but I learned my lesson.
