I want an expensive, moody, petulant, foreign manager, who gets us playing fabulous match winning performances, trashes journalists, stomps angrily out of press conferences and creates havoc on the touchline.

Is that really too much to ask?

Yes. How about just employing Poch or Tuchel or Emery instead?

Here’s a list of favourites just before Gerrard was announced:

Steven Gerrard 1/25 Paddy Power
Frank Lampard 14/1 Paddy Power
John Terry 14/1 BetVictor
Roberto Martinez 16/1 William Hill
Kasper Hjulmand 14/1 BetVictor
Paulo Fonseca 14/1 BetVictor
Graham Potter 16/1 BetVictor

Potter aside, an extremely underwhelming list.

People need to temper their expectations if they think the list will be much different now. Poch and Tuchel ain’t happening.

purslow wants someone who he can control a yes man

Marcelo Gallardo
Mauricio Pochettino
Unai Emery
Kjetil Knutsen
Ruben Amorim

The worry now is what top manager wants to come and fight a relegation battle?

Should have sacked him after the first game.

We aren't far from europe!
Its a easy job for a manager. Also we have good players.

He should have gone during the 1st international break.

With any half average manager we would have a lot more points than we do now.

Shouldn't have appointed him in the first place. Everyone BUT Purslow could see it was a disaster waiting to happen.

So should Purslow also be sacked?

It clearly was a very big risk employing Gerrard, reckless, given he had no experience of management in the PL or any other top league in Europe. Too much of a risk and it's backfired.

If people on here think ewe get get the like of Tuchal or Potch, then you are going to be in for a very rude awakening. These managers are not ‘project’ managers, they are elite and mange in the upper tier of the game, not taking teams that are bordering on relegation. We are in bargain bucket to mid tier managers. Despite our money, we are NOT and attractive proposition.

There’s a big difference between those two though. For Gerrard to be offered a better job, he’d have to be successful at Villa first (sounds absurd now). Poch on the other hand has proven himself already and could receive offers from day one.

I still think it would be worth it to appoint Poch if he said yes, but the risk of him suddenly leaving would be real.

Depends if really likes the project. He was very loyal at Spurs and really invested in them and turned down offers (probably to his detriment in the end).

All we can do is get in contact with his agent and ask the question (although I suspect we already have).

Did we ever see a list of the managers Gerrard beat to get our job?

They must have been truly shit, if indeed they existed.

Hasenhuttl's name was sort of floated after the appointment. Given he was in three days after DS was sacked he was the clear favourite by some margin.

Gerrard won 4 of his first 6 league games in charge.

If we do that again we're in the mix for 7th-9th.

We're only 5 points off Brighton so while we won't be getting close to them or Newcastle while Gerrard is here we can at least attempt to finish above them if we get someone in who hits the ground running.

Just giving Gerrard another 5 games and it will be desperate blind faith and basically self-sabotage on another season.
