We need to be secretive otherwise Chelsea will out bid us on any targets we have and give them a 7 year contract (shortly to be reduced to 5 years due to recent changes in FFP rules)

or Spurs, they like nicking players as well

Eh? There were rumours at the end of December/early January

edit: just picked one off a search  - 28th Dec

https://thehardtackle.com/transfer-news/2022/12/28/aston-villa-fulham-make-offers-to-sign-jhon-duran/

That proves Rich's point doesn't it? Within 2 weeks of rumours coming out he was signed. Ings was out the blue. Rashica, on the other hand, was linked all summer and wasn't even on the club's radar.

They can still give 7 year contracts but only amortise the fee over 5 years for FFP accounting I think the rule will try to be, which defeats what Chelsea are trying to do.

No not really, Rich was saying no rumours and then we signed Duran.  Then Guendouzi rumours have also only been around about the same length of time and given his profile compared to Duran’s it’s not unreasonable to accept it may take longer.

As for Rashica and most players we are linked we, I doubt there is concrete conversations and we, like most clubs have conversations about 100’s of players ongoing and rarely do we take it any further than casual enquiry.  Sometimes media get a whiff and think we are seriously interested or blow up as a big deal when it’s not. I’m guessing that’s what’s happening with some of the links flying around now with the wingers.

The thing is here, there’s only so much we can do to stop the French or Spanish press leaking stuff, they absolutely live for gossip.

The only deals we’ve kept well and truly under the radar really are for English players at English clubs.

Well working on something for 6 months and only having rumours 2 weeks before signing Duran is practically nothing. Speculation that drags on usually means we won't sign the player, but the Guendouzi ones have only been around for a few weeks, so wouldn't put it into that bracket yet.

Who’s to say we haven’t been working on Guendouzi since Emery came in! If we are interested I doubt conversations started the day the first rumour came out.

McKennie potentially on his way to Leeds now. Funny because the claims were he was aiming a lot higher. 🤣

When he meant higher, maybe he meant higher in the country ie further north 😂

Just in case anyone is thinking of suggesting trying to target players from Juventus because of the trouble they are in with the authorities - maybe that isn't a very good idea!  23 players are now being investigated and will potentially face suspension for falsely declaring salary reductions that they did not take.

Be like WW3 in here if we don't sign anyone and Danjuma, Jackson and McKennie all move to Premier League this window.

There is a not insignificant chance we won't agree a fee for Guendouzi and Dembele and wait for both until the summer.

We would get a big FFP boost in this year's accounts of we signed nobody. Blood Duran properly.

Nothing wrong with not signing anyone else and waiting for the summer window. I’m interested to see how if at all the current squad develops under Emery.

I'm happy with this too.

Emery said it all along to be perfectly clear, he will only sign players if they improve the first eleven.

This current team can finish top eight, it is possible.

Hardly.  We aren't going to get relegated and have a small chance of getting into Europe.  We will probably finish just inside the top half, which given how we started under Gerrard will be a miracle.

I'd much rather sign nobody now and wait until the summer, than panic buy and sign the wrong players.

Probably have a riot!

But as you say, the FFP boost would be big, and it's nice to see the club do some housekeeping on our bloated squad.
People moaning that we're down to the bare bones because we've moved on our 4th choice RB, our 5th choice CB and our 6th choice CM, and probably our 4th choice LB shortly.

Of course, plus our 2nd choice (but very expensive and injury prone) CF.

We've got some very good U23s, some of whom have returned to the squad, and Emery wants first team starters. No more Samatta's and Sanson's.

This is all good.

We'd be mad if we didn't sign anyone. Who would be on the bench? It would be irresponsible tbh—sometimes you need to sub players off. Sometimes people need a bit of resting. We'd also have almost zero options to change things in game. We have one winger and one established striker.

I'm sure we will sign players though.
