I agree, also why are they coming here foregoing CL football for them to be the only signings for a 14th place team.  There has to be more coming in.

Imagine sitting in Kamara’s sitting room saying we finished 14th, Gerrard says “come play for me, we finished 14th, I’m signing you, Carlos and a back up LB, ignore those CL offerings…”.  Kamara says “yes” to that? Hardly!

I think they will have been sold a bigger picture and longer term vision to be fair.

Wouldn't just necessarily be based on where we finished, or who we will be signing this summer.

I think players are also a bit smarter than we might give them credit for. Might have watched a few games, looked at the current squad, think we are underachieving etc etc

Discussions will have been multi faceted IMO.

I think the ambitions of the owners plus money obviously will have sealed it, but I'm sure the discussions will have been all encompassing.

I think whatever happens we've had a great window.

  • Got lil Phil on a full time deal.
  • Brought in one of the top midfield youngsters from France.
  • A monster of a centre back in Carlos.
  • Sweden's keeper as back up to Emi
  • LB as back up and a challenge to Luca.
  • Several players hopefully going into the season far more settled and fit than last year.
  • Youth prospects flourishing.
  • Very little in the way of unknowns coming into the club with a focus on strengthening our weaker areas.
  • Most importantly a full pre season without ridiculous distractions.

It shows me that regardless of us not spending fortunes on players that still may not work out, the club and fans are very much on the same hymn sheet. The day's of drastic change are over and now it's about tweaking and raising the levels. I'm quite happy.

Or we’ve only really added definitely one upgrade to the first XI in Kamara with Carlos battling out with Konsa for the RCB position for a team that has been playing poorly for 18 months and a new relatively inexperienced manager at the helm and the team finished with 45 points and 14th last season.

The reality is that it’s somewhere in between your analysis and the devils advocate I put above.

I think the Kamara signing was amazing, the Carlos signing looks really good and locking down Coutinho is great.  Those are great signings but given the expectation of the owners I can’t put this down as a great window yet.  Think we still need another couple of quality additions.

Because even by your analysis almost 20% of the team ie McGinn and Watkins probably need upgrading just to be attempting to challenge for European placed team even if we didn’t get it.

More than that a third of our midfielders and our main striker you think may need upgrading, that’s significant.

Our midfield was a major probably last season and all our eggs are in the basket on a 22 year old very talented, new to the country, league and language.  I worry for Kamara because the pressure is huge to hit the ground running otherwise fans most likely will be on his back rather than allowing a settle in period.

Totally get your point of view. Its just we are now in a world where you cannot spend whatever you want. Our decreasing transfer outlay will be due to increased salaries.

It scares me that i can be totally happy with 8 out of the 11 positions. It has been a long time since i felt like that. Probably 1982 !!

If we fall short this season it will be completely on the manager , not on the quality of the players i think.

Apart from the signing we've made we haven't signed anyone. Got it.

Well it’s a loan…half a signing. He’s not even going to be first choice.

Not convinced given the likely options Kamara had.

The transfer money just isn’t there. People expecting a ‘war chest’ of £200m spend this summer are already starting to get frustrated…

I just worry the longer we are out of the European places, the longer our revenue stagnates from no European money or commercial other revenue from that and thus we aren’t able to add the quality we need to improve because we can’t increase costs/salaries more in later transfer windows.  We are so close as you point out that a bit more outlay now may make a key difference.  Just my opinion though!

The problem is that the Europa league brings in comparatively little. By my calcilations maybe circa £15 mill  if you win it from matchday and prize money takings

Liverpool got 80 mill and then all their matchday revenue on top.from the Champions League.

Its why MON did us the dirty against Spartak and put all his eggs in the Champs League .

God I hate what a moany, never-happy bunch of rocket polishers some of our fan base have become.

Just enjoy that we’ve got a really exciting squad and look forward to a season, eh?

I do wonder if every club suffers the same, or we have just become the masters of it.

The Europa league gets you into the CL thou, provided you win it of course.

I don't see us ever getting into the CL through league places, unless we first sneak in the back way and start getting our revenue and profile up that way.
