Mancini took over the Italian national team that had just failed to qualify for the world cup. The reason they were one of the favourites for the Euros was because of how Mancini got them playing football

No they had the best defence and midfield in Europe thats why they were one of the favourites

Mancini guided them but Italy are a top class striker away from being guaranteed World Cup winners

What is the 'No' in response to? Italy failed to qualify for the W/C and Mancini took over and got them playing better and qualified for the Euros and won it

Yes but its a different squad and the talent was there. Donnarumma, Chiesa, Berardi, Jorginho, Spinazzola, Barella, Di Lorenzo werent involved in the World Cup qualifying failure

This is the reason why I will always hate Southgate, wasted the perfect opportunity to beat a fairly average team in a final at home, will never get a better chance of winning a major tournament. If you are happy watching such a poor league, crack on.

Absolutely agree Southgate should have been sacked on the spot playing average donkeys like Donnarumma, Chiellini, Bonucci, Barella, Chiesa, Veratti, Insigne when he had elite talent like Maguire, Stones, Sterling, Shaw, Pickford and Kalvin Phillips

VT take a bow. We're sniffing our noses at a potential bargain of £16m for a 24 year old international player whose club is currently one of the most successful clubs in the world.

I swear we're becoming like the fans we hate XD

These are words that mean nothing in reality.

'International player' means nothing. There are thousands of international footballers who aren't good enough for Villa.

Juventus aren't a great team anymore. They finished 4th last season, and they're 5th this season. In a very average league.

24 year old doesn't mean much when apparently he's getting worse.

You're the type of fan who are always in the wrong with these things. We've signed countless players like Targett, Traore, Barkley etc and people convince themselves that everybody is wrong and they're actually going to be really good, then all the criticism turns out to be true.

There's no way a player who struggles under pressure in Serie A is then coming to the PL and succeeding.

Yet they did beat the full strength European champions and 3rd best team from the greatest league in the history of the universe this season

I don’t understand how you could possibly reach this judgement. Luiz has been decent in maybe 3-4 games this season but not exceptional in any of them. Martinez, cash, mings, konsa, McGinn, Ramsay and arguably buendia have all outperformed him.

if Nakamba was fit he wouldn’t even be in the team

He looks like a like for line replacement for Dougie. Think it's a good signing just off of that alone. Both for the scenario that Douglas lets his contract run out, and for the scenario where he's not in the team for whatever reason. As good as Nakamba has been under Gerrard, he's not a like for like replacement for Douglas. We play quite differently as a team. Having a midfield 3 to choose from out of these 6 would make us quite strong indeed, and satisfy Gerrard's 2 quality players per position ethos:

Luiz

McGinn

Ramsey

Bentancur

Sanson

Nakamba

The bits of the game I saw in between my WiFi dropping he reminded me a bit like Declan Rice, though tbh I don't rate Rice that much. Far too slow but as holding midfielder reads the game well and protects his back four well. And the porn merchants want £90m+ for him. So £16m for Bentancur seems a steal in comparison.

Nope. Bailey played predominantly on the right the season before we signed him and that’s where his father stated he likes playing the most, so that’s where I assume he sees himself here. Doesn’t matter where he played before. I imagine Cash played more as a winger than a right back in his career at Forest but we signed him as a right back.

We spent £70m on those two, along with £25m on Ings so we didn’t have to field the likes of Traore, Trezeguet and El Ghazi. And, come the end of the Summer, I imagine all three will be gone as we’ll have improved even further.

Stop with the bullsh** just to suit your agenda. The fact we signed who we did in the Summer is proof the club didn’t back our forward players.

Are you suggesting that Buendia and Bailey were signed with no intention of both of them to be on the pitch at the same time??

Are you also suggesting that had all players been fit under Smith, that we would not have seen all 3 of Bailey Buendia and Traore lining up in the same team in the 4-2-3-1 system?

Seem to recall Rice played quite a bit at CB so makes sense he can play the reverse sweeper/CDM well. As an aside there doesn't seem to be a lot going on upstairs from the interviews I've seen

Pretty sure Gerard was quoted as wanting 2 quality players in each position… this is just the ways it’s going to be from now on… not replacing Doug, just competition for places.

So was Smith. It's standard manager talk

I think Rice is brilliant. I wouldn't compare Bentancur with him myself, he's not got that combative style.

I agree, @Tomaszk. My main concern here is, does he actually improve us? You don’t get to the number of appearances and caps he has by being a bad player but is he going to be better than Luiz and is he much different to McGinn and Ramsey?!

The Juve fans comments probably concern me more than they should and I really can’t get on board with the, ‘it’s just £16m’ line. Yes, it’s only £16m compared to a possible £40m for Bissouma but that’s £16m wasted if he isn’t good enough and then we’d only end up probably spending £30+ down the line on someone who does improve us.

I’m boring myself now, but the fact we’ve bid for Bissouma means we’ve been encouraged by either the agent or the selling club that we can strike a deal. I assume the agent. If he goes somewhere for £35m+ this Summer then we’ll have missed a trick. He’s the missing piece of the puzzle for me.

He'll probably improve us the same way Traore did. We didn't have a right winger, so signed one.

He was...ok. Depends who you ask. But we did look to replace him after one season. Don't think doing that again is a good use of money or time.

We can go past a lot of clubs in the next 18 months if we play this right.
