the VAR room needs to have ex players in. i appreciate that to actually referee a game requires specialist training and is a bloody tough job, but the easy part (reviewing a blatant handball on a screen) is what they're getting wrong and needs a non-ref doing it. it's like them reviewing a decision through the eyes of a referee just isn't working and they need just a pure football person to look at it and make the decision.

Why ex players? The rules are not hard to follow and should take anyone of decent intelligence a couple of weeks to learn. Just interview, test and then monitor their performances. If they make repeated mistakes then get rid, if they are good and continue to be good then keep, 2 year trial like anyone else in a job that measures performance.

Yeah I don't think ex players can do it

Same as fans there's the struggle with the fact that they keep making tweaks and changes to the rules and ex players will be stuck with what was and wasn't a foul in their day

Using micah Richards and shearer off MOTD as an example, what wasnt a foul 20 or even 10 years ago now is, same for offside

craziest being what was handball 20 or 10 years ago now isn't... And that's why PGMOL have royally **** it all up, how does handball change?

i guess because they're easier to screen. you know what their allegances are. with the run of the mill public it's much harder

i can't believe we're even having to have the conversation though. these are qualified referees...there's really no excuse for them continuing to make these errors

These baffling decisions only seem to happen regularly in the Premier League. In international football, or European club football it doesn’t seem to happen.

Can we bring in foreign officials?

there are plenty of shit foreign officials too

but one thing it would cut out is instances like mike dean's where they don't want to send their mate to the screen for fear of making him look bad. i wonder how frequently this is a factor...they're all pals. they don't want to tell their mate they've made a mistake

There’s an ex player or 2 on the ‘independent board’

they’re all idiots

For review, I would send every decision to a panel of 20 (1 rep per club) and let them assess whether they’re correct. Because the independent board can’t be trusted to assess objectively.

Just my annual reminder that the R in VAR is for referee so to say that VAR works fine but that's the referees that's the problem is a bit contradictory. IMO of course. The V in VAR works fine-ish. That's about it. Although I'm not even sure that's correct since they draw those wonky lines and the quality is still not good enough to say that they get the exact timing right when looking at the stills from when the ball is hit for offsides.

VAR is a mess and so is the quality of referees in general, but I’m still pissed at Ramsey for holding the keepers arm. No need for it.

That's was a bit of manipulation by the keeper, it was hardly an arm lock.

As I have said in the VAR thread, needs independent trained teams to control VAR, not general referees, they may find it much easier to overule them then too.

I think this is how they do it in Europe, they don't use onfield referees to operate VAR, seems yo work better.

I see no issues with the female referee yesterday either, maybe she's not in the 'click/mens club'.

They may aswell do away with Ref Watch, Dermott Gallagher on ssn. Show him the most blatent ref/var mistake,

Villa handball,

"Rules on handball are difficult to interperate"?

Foul on the Sheffield keeper.

"It was borderline in the next phase of play".

Watkins push,

"I think the player was lucky to get away with that one,  although it was soft and I wouldn't have give it"

At least you get a little bit of non ref bias from Mike Dean, although there lies more proof with referees on pitch and moreso running VAR.

The weird thing is a ref who stepped up and went after pgmol and called them all out would be a huge success, people would love it and listen to him

Surprised in modern media coverage no one is going against the grain purely for traffic, TS have ex pros making a living from it but there's no refs doing it

I think it was Mark Halsey who went against the PGMOL. He is on Talksport occasionally, certainly no fan of Howard Webb. The best I've heard too for non bias, not scared to call out the current  refereeing or VAR for what it really is.

He said he has actually offered his services to help VAR and the PGMOL but said shockingly Webb wasn't interested.

We need a masked referee like the masked magician who gives away all the secrets and is controversial, but says it how it is

Rule is that Meslier should be sent off for hand to face, sure...I don't agree that should always be a red card offence but nonetheless.

But, I would love for refs to have balls and send the Preston player off too. Yellow for instigating + yellow for rolling around like a rocket polisher trying to embellish. Or, a red for instigating as a "third man" like they have in ice hockey would do well too...
