Birmingham City acting chairman Peter Pannu has launched an astonishing attack on the Birmingham Mail, a week after we revealed his ‘secret’ £1.5 million pay deal.

Last Friday we told how Pannu signed a five-year contract with Blues owner Carson Yeung, but the board of parent company BIHL were not informed for more than TWO YEARS.

Our Investigations Editor Jeanette Oldham also revealed how the acting chairman was warned he could face a police complaint from Birmingham FC auditors last March, after being accused of threatening the accountant examining the club’s finances.

Parent company Birmingham International Holdings Limited (BIHL) responded at the time by apologising for a ‘misunderstanding’, insisting that Pannu’s words were not meant as a threat and had been taken out of context entirely.

Now the acting chairman has taken to the Blues club website to hit back at the ‘scurrilous’ and ‘scandalous’ reports.

He said: ‘‘The consultancy agreement was constructively known to the board members.

‘‘Legal advice and tax advice both in the UK and HK had been sought during the audits which confirmed the validity and binding nature of the agreement and the arrangements and Mr. Yeung’s authority, express and ostensible had been confirmed.

‘‘People must understand, which the report chose not to disclose, that there is nothing “secret” about the agreement and, as announced by the company, Mr. Yeung had personally paid for the consultancy fee from the start in 2009 until his arrest in 2011 whilst the vast sums and benefits generated by the consultancy had gone to the club. Could the shareholders have asked for a better deal?’’

In our follow-up article last Saturday, we told how Birmingham-based auditors BDO considered contacting cops after an employee looking through the books at St Andrew’s received an email from Pannu. The soccer boss wrote: ‘‘I am not bothered with your BS anymore. Once the audit is over I will deal with u personally.’’

Partners at the Colmore Row auditors forwarded the message to the soccer club’s board, stating they intended to report the ‘threat’ to police, but wished to give the board the opportunity to comment first.

Parent company Birmingham International Holdings Limited responded by apologising for a ‘misunderstanding’, insisting that Pannu’s words were not meant as a threat and had been taken out of context entirely.

Pannu added in his statement yesterday: ‘‘There has been no ‘threat’ made to anyone and the reference in the email, and as explained to BDO, related to dealing with an internal inquiry at the BDO HQ upon my return to the UK. The report in the paper is completely out of context.’’

The Blues Trust and the Often Partisan website had linked up with the Mail for our two-day investigation into the running of the club.

David Brookes, Editor of the Birmingham Mail, said: ‘‘We stand 100 per cent behind our articles, which are fair, balanced and accurate.

‘‘They are excellent examples of investigative journalism and show how fans and their local newspaper can work together on behalf of their club.’’

Still where they belong, although another relegation for their lower league standard ground wouldnt go amiss. When do the parachute payments end? Thats when the real fun begins.

They will receive a reduced payment next year I think, the payments are over 4 years, 16m a year for the first 2 years, 8m a year for the next 2 years.

That'll just about cover Pannu and his 'pocket expenses'.

It would be great if Villa really turn on a performance at Wigan, and a bunch of Bluenoses have paid to watch it.
