Ross Barkley

Another thing with this… if it’s a low cost deal… we raise his value with his time with us and then sell him on for a tasty profit?

We have to think squad, not team, now we have entered the big boys group.

Absolutely, we had very little depth come the end of the season there with the amount of injuries.

Think about the players to come back from injury. Add a Barkley to that group. Not too shabby for a low fee is it?

Only counter to that is if he's bought in to be a replacement of someone yet to leave eg Luiz, not so good. That's a drop off in first 11 quality then. Hopefully it's the former and not latter.

We need two CMs added. Kamara is out and no idea level he can perform at in the first few months back. In planning terms we are planning as if we don't have him for next season

Luiz, Tielemans, Barkley, Gallagher, McGinn that works as a group of CMs. Especially as a few of them can play Second Striker and one of the wide midfielders who become a narrow 10.

It's a very good group of midfielders for sure - but I think it still leaves us short of a "defensive" midfielder.  I'd really like to see another Kamara type player in the squad.  Then we would have real strength across a wide range of "positions / roles" to allow for better rotation and or different options depending on who we are playing.  Luiz and McGinn played far too much football this season and we need to be able to keep them fully match-fit for more of the season.  So whilst we need cover for them both - we also need to make sure that they are not the default cover for Kamara.  The more players we can play in their proper specialist position the better.  McGinn, Luiz and Konsa are probably the worst "culprits" for being good at a number of roles (and so being used to cover those roles) but just not quite as good in those as they are when they are playing their preferred position.

Hopefully if he does come it's with something to prove. Not that he was terrible first time here, just injured and then never turned up after that.

No objections to adding his kind of quality to the squad. If he is one of out "cheap" pickups, then it bodes well for the depth we're looking at.

When he first arrived I genuinely thought he was going to be the mastermind who unlocked the potential of the team.  Some of his initial link-up play was sensational.  Then he got injured, caught Covid and the wheels came off.

We really struggled when Kamara and tielemans were both unavailable, so Barkley would definitely improve the squad as he brings some of the same attributes.

So he's coming as a DM? A position he's excelled at that much Luton shipped 85 goals with him screening the back line. Fantastic.

An upgrade on Chambers(a player we couldn't give away) and Tim is seriously nothing to shout about. It's not going to be too difficult is it.

He doesn't upgrade our midfield, which is my original point.

Anyway I'm done discussing bringing him back. I've said my piece tbf.

I am not sure why you are so shook by the prospect of improving the squad. Not to mention that Emery has a history of taking players much like Barkley and reinventing them as pivotal parts of his squad/team (Coqeulin anyone?). Although the reinventing seems to have been done at Luton in this case.

Also it takes a whole team to defend - not just one Ross Barkley so you can keep the stats.

No updates?

Might have already been mentioned but listened to the FTLOPM podcast yesterday who had somebody from a Luton fan channel on and he said that Barkley has a 5-7 million release clause and it's not a free transfer. Maybe this is being negotiated

Plus the transfer window isn't even open.

Isn't their supposed to be some sort of relegation clause in his contract?  Probably why it's taking so long, if he was on a free it would be done by now.  We could send them Archer or Tim in some sort of deal.

Nobody is "shook" so don't talk bollocks. Some just don't so any merit in bringing him back after his previous stint, or that it really improves the squad. It's hardly reinventing is it, managing to last a season after years of doing nothing playing in a Luton side that have been relegated. 😂

That does not mean anything. We can make a deal now, he just can't join before the window opens.

Most likely a deal is agreed and it will be announced when the transfer window opens and the player returns from holidays. Fans are always impatient with these things but for clubs it makes no difference if it is finalised in June or early July.
