What's the Worst Job You've Ever Had?

I've never really had a shitty "proper" job. When I was a kid I did things like delivering papers and working as a petrol pump attendant, but in my adult life I've only really had a few. Worked on the tills in a petrol station, which would probably be the worst if I had to rank them, but I really enjoyed it. Had a stint in a call centre selling payment protection insurance for Barclays and made an absolute fortune from my shady selling techniques. They were supposed to fail people who ran a little too close to the line  for their sales, but I was racking up 20-30 a day compared to the company average of 3-4, so they let me get away with murder. I wonder how much money I cost Barclays with these lawsuits around falsely sold PPI actually...

Well I'd like to thank you, you've kept me in a job. I'm now working in specialist complaints for Barclays refunding mis-sold PPI!

Never had a really shit job. Post man during my student years was pretty awful and much harder then I expected. Didnt hate it though.

However, I dont think I've ever had a job ive enjoyed or could see myself doing for years which worries and saddens me greatly.

Same. Incidentally, the Christmas post round was the easiest thing I ever did.

First Saturday job was selling Farah trousers on Burton's in Brum city centre. £10 per day and I had to sell 15 pairs a day, at a time when no one in their right mind would wear Farah's. Managed to string it out for almost a year.

Doing time & motion consultancy in Basildon Dairies was horrible but mostly because the place smelt like sick.

My job as roller coaster tester had its ups and downs too.

Circle of life and all that! Lots of serious piss taking in that job. One of the lads regularly put on a Russian accent for no reason other than he thought it was amusing. Then we'd have competitions to see who could swear the most without actually swearing. Stuff like "for comparison's sake" pronounced as "fuckomparison's sake" etc. There was one particularly nonsensical week where we tried to shoehorn as many dairy products as we could in. I would assume you've got your work cut out for you

Haha, haven't had any complaints about anything like that as of yet, will keep an eye out.

My favourite complaint so far was this:

"This page is for you to tell us what happened when you took out the payment protection insurance. (eg. where the sale took place, information you were given, questions you asked)

Mis-sold PPI

Finally, tell us why you are unhappy with the insurance.

Disappointed."

It's difficult to know where to start answering that complaint.

Thinking back I'm not sure I broke the rules, as such, when selling it. Typically it'd be a case of focusing of your outstanding balance paid off per month and wiped after month 12 if you lose your job or fall ill and can't work. If that didn't get them interested, the fallback was the negative sell of "sure why not try it out for a month, and if you don't  like it, pop your cancellation in the the post and  you won't  be charged"

That one usually got them in, but we were specifically told never to use it to sell as most people forgot about it and then complained 8 months later when they realised they were paying for it

We were never given too much information about the process, as far as we were told it was cut and dry - you're made redundant or laid up and your repayments are covered for 10% a month. Seemed like an awful scam to me though TBH, I'd  say the companies made a mint from it

I used to do the same as P3te when cold calling, apart from the ripping off the customer bit.

I don't buy that there's a cold calling job in the world that doesn't involve ripping off a customer
