What do you drive?

It's a 1935 Standard with 1141cc engine

In 1935 they made

  • 10/12 Speed Model
  • Nine
  • Ten
  • Twelve
  • Sixteen
  • Twenty

None of those vehicles have a 1141cc engine. The closest is the Nine, which had 1052cc, but it doesn't look like a Nine from 1935, which was only 2 door and was smaller. The Twenty has a side slung spare wheel so it's not that either. As far as I can tell the 10/12, Ten, Twelve and Sixteen look basically the same front on and any difference could just be options etc.

So it's one of those. But might have a different engine in. It looks like Austin produced a 1141cc engine around that time, so might have been replaced at some point.

  • 2 weeks later...

Probably a bit of a mid life crisis but I find myself looking at cars online that I liked as a kid. Thinking maybe I should treat myself as a 2nd car. I probably wouldn't as I seem to have a real problem spending money but doesn't stop me looking! I'm becoming fed up of driving the same cars as everyone else.

Things like old Lexus LS400's or a early 90's Toyota Land Cruiser! They're fairly cheap second hand and built like tanks. Probably not very practical though!

For months I've been toying with the idea of getting myself a TVR Chimaera to dick about with at the weekend.

I'm almost certain that the massive smile it puts on my face would be wiped out as soon as I see the repair bills every few months. But I'm still tempted.

Thought I'd check how much it costs for one from the early 90s. **** me.

ah, I see you intend to buy a really good one in better than new condition, not just take a punt on an average one.

when I was a kid, it was all about the Lancia Stratos for me

with honourable mentions for the Renault Alpine and Jensen Interceptor

there was an Interceptor for sale in town literally for years when I was a kid, gutted when it finally went as I'd intended to buy it when old enough!

£40k - £50k for a reasonable NSX (the one pictured is for sale at £43k i think - a '91 model)

How much are the TVRs?

Lancia did a model called a Thema. Basically a bog standard square saloon - similar to a Saab 9000. Except on one of the models they chucked a 4.2 Ferrari V8 lump in there! Proper sleeper car.

My Dad was always an Interceptor fan - they weren't bad value 10 years or so ago - now they cost a fortune.

I was looking at a Lancia Beta when I was buying my first car. Literally stood there looking at it, not really knowing what to look for, just waiting for the bit where I hand over my money... When the rear window fell in. Nobody touching it or rocking the car, just gave up and fell in.

I bought a Morris Marina.

What I should have done, was buy the Beta and also buy some duct tape.

Classic car prices are mental now.

I sold a good condition stock '89 E30 BMW 325i Sport for peanuts some years back. It'd cost me £15k or more to buy it back now!

Looking at the Honda NSX's, a decent one is about £45k-£50k. I'm sure it was about £20k about 5 years ago!

It was a good job the leather seats were easily wiped down. I was up to my neck in p u s s y when I owned mine back the 90's.

Yes they are indeed chap.

It makes you feel a tad sick knowing 'what if' etc.

Even some classic vans too.

My late father owned a classic Bedford CF ice cream van many years ago. Brought it for £3000, in 2004. Sold it in 2012 for £7000 despite it paying for itself X times over.

- Now they fetch close to £20k!  (In good working condition). Definately a market for classics.

Seeing  the Lancia reminded me , did anyone else collect car brochures when they were a youngster ? My mate and I used to cycle around all the dealerships asking them for a brochure , and trips out with the parents would involve a quick stop at a car dealership if we passed one

the Lancia dealership in Weybridge being the Holy grail of brochures to get as the salesmen were notoriously child unfriendly , even the Rolls Royce dealership used to let us have a brochure but I think that was to get us out of his showroom so we wouldn’t put our grubby paws on the silver shadow

Some of them were quite glossy affairs for their time as I recall
