  1. Comments like this one make me think Villa Talk is a portal where people from different universes can comment on their own little worlds.
  2. Funnily enough, I thought it was one of his better games ... compared to the last few months.
  3. I live in a rural bit just north of the 49th. We have rural airports that connect to Vancouver, even Spokane is only three hours by car, the US border gods permitting. My experience of Americans is a little bit select. By and large, they are well-to-do educated. The so-called "deplorables" I sort of understand. It's the 'nice" people who vote for Trump I really don't understand.
  4. It's not the payback time, it's whether the project makes money. The five years is a reflection of an aggressive rate of return ... it's probably about 15%. I don't know how much the construction is going to cost say 100 million; what rate of return are you going to accept, bearing in mind a 20 million overrun or delay is not impossible. Like I said it is a conservative estimate. I would hope the senior management doesn't put the club at risk. edit plus it is not really five years as such ... the construction time and spending rate need to be factored in.
  5. A rough conservative estimate for the financial viability of a project might be assessed by this simple formula: Five years of the increased revenue - capital cost of the project - lost revenue during demolishing/construction If positive then go for it, if negative don't do it. The five years can be varied, depending on interest rates, risk tolerance etc.
  6. Thruppence and ha'penny? Farthings were a bit before my time ... but I have a few. I have a Heaton penny, but never managed to get a Kings Norton penny.
  7. OK ... the officiating was really poor. The push in Watkins' back Possibly the two handballs Ramsey being manhandled on the line The new phase of play goal by Bailey The foul on Duran, and giving them a free kick which led to Archer's goal These were errors which affected the outcome of the game. I thought the players were fine, but the ponderous tactics against a low block don't work. I gave Lenglet the PotM, more because he did well for his full premier debut. This draw, for me, is on Emery. He has to give the players the tools and permission to try and break down the low block. I would sooner see more intercepted passes and unsuccessful runs at the defence. Don't let the opposition set up the low-block catch them on the counter.
  8. I like the gas lamp crown with the flame, nice touch. Nothing to dislike here Preferences: The lion facing east, especially in our 150 anniversary year "Football Club" is unnecessary I would take Estd out and put the 1874 at the bottom Anyway ... I would be happy with it as it is
  9. I can see where the inspiration for our new logo may have come from.
  10. The only thing that makes sense to me is the money is needed elsewhere where the project will have a better rate of return. I might not want to advertise this as a reason not to invest in Villa Park at the moment. Transport? In 1946 ... record attendance 76 588.
  11. Growing fanbase? For me there are two aspects ... there are the personal stories like the OP and then there are the financial aspects. My personal story is I was taken to Villa Park by a St John's Ambulance neighbour. My Dad did not really have a club but would have supported Arsenal, as it was the only English club he had heard of in Latvia during the 1930s. But at the moment why would we want more local support? To drive up the season ticket waiting list numbers? Of course, the real reason is to increase worldwide TV numbers (advertising etc) and perhaps merchandise tack. It was noted that the logo looked a little Arabic. While I am not a fan, but there 400 million worldwide that may feel somehow attracted to the logo ... it's a longshot I know, but who knows?
  12. Currently reading The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life, by Herrnstein and Murray. From 1995, I suspect it is a bit dated now, but interesting. The forces at work they describe are probably still at work today. I have not gotten to the contentious chapters yet.
  13. This possibly could be it, but here Kamara is trying to pull 33 away from Emery and Martinez.
  14. Last few games Ollie has been retrieving balls from the net when a special goal has been scored.
  15. I posted a video above. Can you point out where Boubacar needs to take personal responsibility?
  16. I thought Boubs by and large was an adult in the room.
  17. Can you point out in this video where he actually lost his Head?
