It's never happen with the champions League as they want to milk the TV money, but Europa League is hardly big TV money as it is. I've long said it should be a straight knockout. Clubs don't take it seriously as it's about a billion extra matches. Make it 256 teams (can include some more clubs then), straight draw with no seeding, one-leg based on luck of the draw, straight knockout. Would mean only playing eight games to win it so clubs might take it seriously, and it'd be a lot more exciting.
  2. Presumably bids have to be inscribed on vellum. The calf is being flayed as we speak.
  3. Not many people talking about keepers. We need a keeper. I know we have dozens but we need a good one. Otherwise we start the season with Nyland and a hope and a prayer that the injury hasn't affected Heaton in any way. and if Heaton struggles on his return, we have Nyland and an unproven Steer to see us through to January when we'll have to panic buy. Striker, Winger, Keeper. Those are absolute musts for me. Anything else is a bonus.
  4. Are you in the Upper? You can barely move in the Lower at half time as the Holte Suite eats up all the space.
  5. I don't know why people are saying they'd be happy with this if we buy two strikers. We won't be buying two, we have Wes coming back and play one up front. I'm expecting one striker coming in. I think those expecting two will be disappointed.
  6. Anyone else remember the good old days when a kit lasted a couple of seasons, and only proper arsehole clubs like Man U changed their kit every year?
  7. It's ridiculous. You can now change half of the outfield. It's like an international friendly. I think the drinks break will stay because imagine how much the TV companies can sell a minute of advertising for midway through a half in a big match. Will be much more than half time ads because it's not enough time for people to leave, so they have a captive audience. And we all know that money rules football these days. Surprised it hasn't happened years ago.
  8. The drinks break will be here to stay, and I would put a lot of money on it being used as an advertisement break midway through each half within a couple of years.

  10. Is it something we can do ourselves? We must have loads of old villa tops between us. I wouldn't mind losing a few to this. A bunch of us chip in for postage and bob's your uncle. I'd be happy to try and organise if no one else fancies it?
  11. Would also love to chuck a few quid at this! Should someone start a thread? Guessing it might go down better if one of the longer-standing forumites started it rather than a part-timer like me.
  12. We'd have 34 points and -27, to Bournemouth's 34 points and -25 and be down. It's a silly argument though. Who knows what happened if we went 1-0 down to Sheff U? We might have gone on to win 8-1 and win every other game. There's no way of knowing. Chaos theory ennit.
  13. Agreed. Unfortunately I think we need to buy a new first choice keeper and let Heaton prove his fitness after an injury like that. Which worries me as our record of buying keepers is pretty dire.
  14. I guess this is one of those that we'd be happy to keep as long as he's not the first choice each time, but we might get some decent offers to consider. Happy either way, as long as we sign a better winger in the summer which is one of our highest priorities. He's not good enough for where we want to be but has a weird knack of scoring. Either way, well done Trez!
  15. He ain't going nowhere lads. Time to kick on. Stick a couple of decent wingers and a striker that can score into this team and Jack'll have 20 assists a year and we'll be pushing for Europe (if we can sort the keeper situation out). An extra year under the belt will do wonders for some of our younger players like Konsa and Luiz.
  16. Top work. Bottom half of championship to promotion in less than a season. Then survival after a complete rebuild. Fantastic. He has much to learn but he's more than earned a chance to do it here.
  17. I got 19/1 on Ladbrokes earlier for that. Way better than betting on Bournemouth to stay up.
  18. He came in part way through a season to an out of form team. Then won ten on the bounce and got promotion. Don't know what more you want from the bloke last season really.
  19. I've only skimmed this thread and haven't been in here much recently, but I'm guessing I'm in the minority that would keep him. I think in the same way a manager like Bruce is good at keeping teams up by levelling the playing field, Smith is good at battering teams when we have better players. Even with a few key players gone well be one of the strong teams in the championship next season. Keep Smith, he'll get us up. Then sack him when we get promotion and appoint Bruce.
  20. He'd have scored that bloody El Ghazi chance even with his leg hanging off. If I remember right there was a nice happy end to that story in that he ended up marrying the nurse who looked after him.
  21. Ah, the Santa match. I remember it fondly. 2-0 down at half time I think.
  22. Yeah, after we were on 4 points after 10 I accepted relegation and had a right laugh. The 0-0 with Newcastle at the end of the season was one of my villa park highlights.
  23. Oh well, bring on the championship. We're in much better shape than last time. This is the least enjoyable season I can ever remember. No VAR and we might win some games. Let's win the (a) league.
