I'm a little surprised GTA IV is getting mentioned, it was pretty underwhelming IMO

Easily the best GTA in my opinion.

Vice City comes close, and maybe if you take the time factor into account it was better. But GTA IV was superb.

I think it's a technically better game than the previous GTA's of course, but I think they sapped some fun out of it in an attempt to make it a more realistic, dark GTA. The Ballad of Gay Tony DLC lacks the depth or playthrough length of the normal single player, but I probably enjoyed that more.

Each to their own. We'vehad this debate a few times on here. Imo, previous GTAs had gotten to the stage where there was just too much shit to do that didn't matter, but you still had to. Getting girlfriends, going to the gym, eating, getting a haircut etc etc. San Andreas was a good game surrounded by tonnes of shit that diluted it down and made it a lot less fun, imo.

GTA IV had stripped a lot (but not all) of that back and got the balance just about right.

But that's for me. I don't spend a whole lot of time on games these days so for some people, the vastness of San Andreas was probably heaven.

Actually I preferred Vice City to SA, by a distance. If I ever go back and play one it's Vice City. It's just an atmosphere thing that they nailed. I've never been one to do all the crap San Andreas had on it.

It's difficult to describe, the best way to put it is that the PS2 games just don't take themselves too seriously. One of the missions involves putting a pair of tits on the side of a building, infact you do about 5 missions for a porn studio. In San Andreas you get a jetpack, and get to steal a Harrier. It's just that kind of thing that is missing in 4, but stuff like that was what made GTA great in the first place.

I take your point. And if there was a game that I'd love them to do again in a newer version (in much the same way as GTA V appears to possibly be a continuation of the San Andreas theme) it would be Vice City.

But I think GTA IV still had it's share of mad moments.

Stealing a train by hooking it upto a helicopter and flying off, for example.

Have you tried Saints Row the Third? It's madder than a box of frogs.
Yeah, great game. I put it in my first post actually.

That's on the DLC though, isn't it? That DLC was superb.

Ah maybe. It's a while since I played it all and it sort of blurs into one.

TBOGT was superb though. Wasn't a huge fan of TLATD, I don't really enjoy the motorbikes in the game so a whole game (effectively) that features them heavily was a bit of a ball ache.

Fallout 3 (New Vegas didnt grip me in the same way)

MGS4 (surprised no ones mentioned this yet)

Arkham games

Mass Effect 2

Red Dead Redemption (really needed to be harder though, or at least have option to increase difficulty)

Honourable mentions to inFamous & Heavy Rain

1. GTA IV (minus the glitches and running problems on the PC version)

2. Mass Effect series

3. Dragon Age (first one)

4. Skyrim

5. One of Shogun and Empire TW

Honourable mention - Fifa (particularly Fifa 12), it's really quite amusing to compare the current edition of Fifa to its predecessors from the middle of the last decade - Fifa now recreates football so realistically it's unreal. Still has a lot of flaws to iron out of course (hate the crossing) - it's some distance away from perfect recreation of the real thing - but 8 years ago I'd never have thought it possible for football gaming to be so good.

(I'm a PC gamer, hence the TW games, and hence the omission of RDR)

fallout 3 - simply amazing

call of duty modern warfare - really got me into multi-player

Assassin's creed - Whilst the 1st game wasn't great for a launch title it showed so much promise for what was to come over the next few years and has since developed into an excellent series

mass effect 2 / dragon age origins - 2 amazing games by bioware with endless replay value and excellent stories

red dead redemption - had the feel of a gta game but i was playing as a cowboy instead of someone wannabe gangster. loved it.

Very surprised at all the mentions for Dragon Age: Origins. It was alright, in fact it was pretty good, but I wouldn't have it in my top 20 this gen. Well, I say that, I'm guessing realy. I havent thought about a top 20. Maybe I should just to prove the point.

4 or 5 of you have mentioned Dark Souls, I genuinely havent heard of it before so im going to look it up now and see if its worth getting

Exactly what I was thinking. I hear it is notoriously hard too, but is universally acclaimed.
