Enter President Hollande....it will be interesting to see how he approaches Germany on austerity matters and how he handles internal ethnic politics...

Meanwhile the National Front won 17% of the vote....

And Greece is giving its socialist party the elbow and into 3rd place

All change in Europe it seems

Worrying that a party in Greece (The Golden Dawn party) policies include placing landmines on the Turkish border to stem immigration ... Has got around 8 % of the vote ... Doesn't sound a lot but then the biggest party is only showing around 18 % of the vote

Discovered this morning that Sarky didn't like wine or cheese and preferred watching telly to reading. No wonder they kicked him out.

There was some intellectual type wittering away on Radio 4 the other week. He was spouting sense and shit in almost equal measure.

One point he made that stuck - the politics of constitutional monarchies tended not to stray very far from the centre grounds. Republics, conversely, could be more polarised politically.

I was working in France a decade or so when Le Pen Sr was enjoying strong popular support, graffiti and slogans everywhere. At the same time the Left were also on the march in many of the major cities, causing chaos.

I'd be worried if our voting habits mirrored theirs, but in France extreme is normal when it comes to politics.

Won't be losing sleep over the rise of the Right or the new Socialist administration across the Channel.

I will however be interested to see how he deals with big business, and how the moneyed classes will respond to the tax hikes in the pipeline.

A move away from the pro-business politics that has dominated the west over the previous few decades, is a move in the right direction.

Doubt he, or any other left leaning politician, will be able to change much though.

As a result I can see parties on the far right creep forward as the left fails to ease the pain and perhaps more pertinent a failure to deal with immigration.

And so history will forever repeat until we take a collective step back and figure things out properly.

A top income tax rate of 75% has been touted. Does this mean we have a better chance of signing Eden Hazard?

Not sure about Hollande. As someone on the rolling news mooted, he's unlikely to be very radical. Plus ça change...

At least he's not that little git Sarko, though. Thank **** that arsing shit is off.

Is not really a move to the left, its more of a time to give the other lot a go, Hollande isn't that left anyway same as the UK Labour party isn't really that left either (despite what the press would have you believe

Agree with the above, his big problem may be delivering against raised expectations. If those who voted for him feel in six months that he has back pedalled / not delivered on some of his fairly unrealistic promises (retirement at birth, etc) they may start getting a bit fiesty i.e. in the traditional French manner of taking to the streets and burning stuff.

Blame our Politicians for that.

All of them have continually ignored and allowed mass immigration and entire areas of european cities to become large slums filled by migrants who have little common with that countries indigenous white ethnic groups in relation to values and culture. Not to mention all the crime. Need I mention some areas in Brum for instance...

I dont know about anyone else but I dont want anybody coming to my country unless they are fleeing a war zone or have the required amount of skills that will benefit us such as doctors etc. Because Greece has no party who wants to focus on immigration they have turned to thi golden dawn lot who are offering street level protection.

There is a very simple formula to address this:

Skilled immigration - good

Unskilled immigration - bad

Also very significant that 1 in 5 of the French electorate voted for the hard right Front Nationale. They will almost certainly get seats in the French parliamentary elections next month on a staunch anti-immigrant ticket.

European politics is polarising again in a disturbingly familiar way.

Yes because this really happens doesn't it? Large slums filled by migrants who have little in common with that countries indigenous white ethic groups….

Sorry but thats straight out of the BNP handbook and its complete and utter nonsense

You just described Handsworth in the 50's and 60's, shall we ship all the blacks home?

Oh and most of the economic migrants to this country are white…

Also its not YOUR country its OUR country, all of us

I like your thinking. I'm going to stand as an MP next time on this very issue.

I promise to enforce the borders of anywhere north of Oxfordshire with guard posts and land mines. God forbid we should let the poor unskilled from the North down here.

Imagine it, ghettos of Scousers living in shanty towns on the outskirts of London..... how terrible.

Oh, and anyone who's not pale and ginger will be forcibly deported from whence they came. Can have them diluting the Purity of the race can we? Unless the know about medicine... or maybe represent the Homeland in some international sport.

The real threat to this country is from racist, bigoted, intolerant clearings in the woods like you.

I don't think it is as simple as skilled/unskilled. Why can't they come here to gain skills?

If there are apprenticeships going spare then our own young unemployed should be on them, not immigrants. That's not racism it's common sense. If you are talking about (paying) overseas students coming here for higher education then great - the universities need the money.

However it's not the UK's job to educate anyone who fancies washing up on our shores, we are after all a little short of cash to be dishing out free education when our own students are paying a small fortune for the privilege.

What about unskilled asylum seekers?
Asylum seekers are a relatively small minority of the overall number of migrants and I wouldn't argue against sheltering them if they are genuine. It does though seem that once the war at home is over very very few will voluntarily leave the UK, and you do have to wonder why they choose to go through so many other countries in the EU where they could (and should) legitimately claim asylum in favour of getting to the UK. It couldn't be because we are known in the thrid world as the softest of soft touches, could it?

Immigration is something we should be proud of, and it should be dealt with decency and not polemic soundbites.

Skilled immigration is an economic necessity, not something to be proud of. If you are talking about a tradition of tolerance towards incomers then that is something different, but tolerance doesn't mean that uncontrolled or mass immigration is either good for its own sake or necessary.

How am I racist?? .......immigrants to the UK have been from all colours black, asian and white :bonk: !!!

Can this person be banned please? that last post contains personal abuse which is a clear breach of this sites rules 8)

Where do I say the Golden Dawn party is good?? left wing political correct attitudes like yours throughout the whole of europe in terms of not letting the other side of the argument voice their opinion has led to the extreme far right gaining ground as much as the economic crisis.

To quote the great Winston Churchill...

"The fascists of the future will be called anti-fascists"
