We should have a sticky that explains why bookies take the betting off every night.

Pretty sure last year every day there was someone coming on saying "OMG they've stopped taking bets!"

I'm getting £50 on Southgate today

Ticks all the boxes, Villa connection too so would go down well with fans

I also think he would be loyal to us for 4-5 years as he was to Gibson at Boro

Expect his odds to shorten after lunch

50 Quid won`t be enough to shorten his odds.

Former Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today emerged as a shock candidate for the vacant Villa manager’s position after contact with chief executive Paul Faulkner.

The Express & Star can reveal that McCarthy, who is on holiday in Florida at the moment, had a telephone conversation with Faulkner late last night as Villa started to widen their search to replace Alex McLeish, who was sacked by owner Randy Lerner earlier this week.

Bookmakers have slashed the odds on McCarthy replacing McLeish in the Villa Park hot-seat from 25-1 to 11-8 favourite, although the claret and blues have yet to formally interview any potential candidates.

Villa fans have reacted with alarm to speculation linking them with another manager tainted by relegation so soon after McLeish.

But it is understood McCarthy has been admired from within the Villa hierarchy for some time for his ability to recruit young and hungry players on a relatively low budget.

McCarthy has been out of work since he was sacked by Wolves in February after five-and-a-half years at Molineux and has turned down opportunities at Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town in a bid to secure a return to a Premier League club.

The 53-year-old would appeal to some of the senior figures in the Villa dressing room including defender Richard Dunne, who was handed his Ireland debut by McCarthy, and goalkeeper Shay Given having worked with both at international level.

Should he land the job McCarthy would also be in a prime position to cherry-pick the best players from Wolves’ squad following their relegation, including winger Matt Jarvis and striker Steven Fletcher.

Other possible job contenders include Norwich’s Paul Lambert and Wigan’s Roberto Martinez.

Faulkner revealed his phone has been “going non-stop”. “I think there’s an awful lot of reasons you would want to come to Villa,” said Faulkner.

“Our stadium is one of the best in the country, we have a fantastic owner who loves the club , the club’s history, the fans are phenomenal – why would you not want to come here?”

Interesting shout CI - but I would wager he is settled in his role at the FA and looks almost comfortable with his punditry position on ITV.

I'd like to see a proper old boy have a crack for a bit and Gareth may be a good call. Some will never forget how he left Villa for more ambition and ended up at Middlesbrough. IIRC Bosnich, Ehiogu, David James and Boeteng also went for similar reasons and look what happened to them... bugger all lol.

Southgate and Townsend in sensation double swoop?

Why do people want AVB as manager? :?

Because he did very well at porto and seems to be a good football manager.

He came 1st in a 2 horse race with a superior squad. Then did nothing at Chelsea and cost them their CL status (assuming they dont win the final).

Why the **** is Faulkner calling McCarthy ?

Get this idiot away from the selection process

He hasn't :!:

Care to elaborate on the 'target'? :D

I don't know who it is other than ' it will excite the fans ' but that doesn't mean very much as some will say Lambert or Martinez excites but then others say it doesn't excite .

No guarantee they will get their target but my humble opinion it suggest its somebody under contract

They wouldn't go near MM. They have been open with their profile and it doesn't fit. I think id will be one of Lambert, Martinez, Rodgers or Poyet.

They did ask me but wouldn't take a drop in salary hence they have moved on :|

Well one thing is for sure all Villa fans agree that none of Megson, Bruce or McCarthy "excite the fans". My opinion is that we will try and push for Lambert ASAP, not only to avoid Liverpool swooping in and taking him, but also to give him plenty of time to start sorting our mess of a squad out.
