With all respect to Nick Harris, I’ll believe it when I see it.  If you go to his next tweet on this thread he notes sanctions, and I’ll be surprised if it’s any more than a big fine and a couple window transfer ban, which if found guilty will likely be it.  Do you really think that’s going to impact City much?  It’s punishment without real punishment.  No way will they strip titles or a serious points deduction that has a real impact.  The PL aren’t going to cut their nose off to spite their face…Man City are one of their cash cows.  I’m surprised anybody thinks anything else.

Then there's this guy - former financial adviser to Man City, a Man City fan, a former banker, current lawyer, CEO & general counsel to a PLC dealing with allegations of historic accounting issues.

Mate, you've got it wrong, I suspect. I do appreciate the thinking, and your cynicism is understandable, but a little nonsensical, isn't it? Or maybe not cynical enough? Why would the PL do a huge investigation if it was really just in the business of protecting corruption? Just doesn't make sense. It's a confederation of clubs, after all, with a 200-strong set of employees in central London, and I think they really think they want to succeed as a league and national and international enterprise.  Things are way beyond "slap on the wrist." Why investigate and devastatingly accuse a club you're aiming to suck up to and somehow mainly try to milk money from? You should read a French social scientist like Pierre Bourdieu. If anything, this act of charging ManCity is a way of helping to preserve a very high-minded sense of moral probity by the PL. If you want to be cynical, you need to dig even deeper. Keeping a "clean game" is an extremely valuable commodity---worth more than even Haaland on the telly.

One thing that occurs to me is that the punishments might well be weak, but the real danger for City is that Sheikh's of Abu Dhabi decide that the shame of being found to be untrustworthy financial cheats with little to no morals might well be the exact opposite of the reason they got involved with City in the first place - they might well decide to make a quiet exit and go buy F1 or the New York Knicks instead.

It'd be interesting to see what 'brand City' is worth without them and how many takers there might be.

So? You’re quoting some professional people views on it. There are other professionals that don’t feel much will happen.  These are just peoples views, some top professional people like them and some average joe’s who have various backgrounds like us.

This isn’t a poll of what some people believe and some don’t believe will happen.  Loads of highly skilled thought the sky6 should’ve had impacts based on the super league breakaway and nothing happened.

I think it’ll be a slap on the wrist as I said in the last comment.  Many will agree and many won’t.  We all believe the book should be thrown at them but in reality it’s very unlikely to be anywhere near that.

When it’s all done in a couple of years time, please feel free to destroy me if I’m wrong but I’m not holding my breath.

Well yes, two guys specialist in this subject - one an accountant for Citeh. I don't doubt there is a long wait until we get to the punishments, but this is an unprecedented situation - I don;t think past precedent applies here. But each to their own of course, I'm choosing to keep an open mind on this one and anyway my memory is too short to go shouting told you so years later..

I don’t think I’ve got it wrong. I started to write why I think it makes sense to each of your points but I have better things to do with my time.  If you think I’m wrong, fair enough but come back to me when they just get a slap on the wrist, likely a fine and a short transfer embargo in a couple years time.

It's going to be fascinating to see it unravel over the next couple of years - if the Emirates stays on it and doubles down, it'll be about how much football is prepared to punish City knowing that the Emirates is quite capable of punishing football.

I think they're going down. But it will take time to play out. Whatever takers there are will want to buy low.

Fair enough.( And don't we all ...). But if I'm right, I ask that you supply me with a free set of 🫡 emojis on all my posts until Villa wins Europe. 😉

Wouldn't be overly surprised if it turns into a punish the owners and not the fans situation with heavy fines but less football punishment. Hopefully they go for the throat thou.

Considering what has happened to "smaller" clubs with much fewer irregularities they should have the book thrown at them.

Points deduction, relegation, transfer ban and a mahoosive fine.

So they'll probably get a fine which won't even trouble them.

What? Like Bury, Bolton, Derby, Gretna, Rushden and Diamonds etc?

Man City are just Bolton who struck oil…

Dissolve the bastards, and take their verminous fans with them…

Like “The dip” in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”

Good one. Love every crumb of this schadenfreude strudel this week. Keep it coming, Pep!

Quote

If all you have left is schadenfreude in your rooting interests, which is generally how it works out for the whole middle of the Premier League, Manchester City have been your best friend for the past two days. First came a surprisingly limp 1-0 defeat at their house of horrors Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to Spurs, and then today came news that the Premier League is charging them with financial foul play over nearly a 10-year period. And yes, this is what UEFA tried to get City on a couple years ago, but couldn’t.

In the Premier League’s statement, there’s a lot of legalese and references to various Premier League rules, but it isn’t all that different from what UEFA charged them with and originally handed them a two-year ban on European competitions. In fact, the Premier League investigation stems from the same Der Spiegel leaks that perked UEFA’s ears up.
