Have they announced whether there will be a GPe yet?

They have.

Limpid, I've only ever seen Nexus phones for sale on the UK Google Play Store. Would you have to import a GPe m8?

Would this complicated?

You could import it. Or you could use a UK handset specialist to import it for you (so that you get UK/EU consumer protection), but you should be able to buy a UK handset and flash it to GPe. If you aren't certain just wait until others have done this to see how easy it is.

I think I've convinced myself to get an M8 or a Z2 (and run GPe). I bet I end up with the (unannounced) new Nexus.

It puts you into very dodgy ground if you need to use the warranty.

I think HTC officially supported changing a retail One to GPe so they may do the same again. Not sure though.

Sony does not. I had to do a full return to Sony stock before handing my in to repair the sim-slot I rather clumsily broke

If you are paying for a repair, the warranty is irrelevant. Am I missing something?

Warranty repair. Didnt tell them it was my fault of course :) . But to get gpe working I had to unlock the bootloader which apperantly is a no no warrantwise.

I don't see how they can deny you a warranty repair for an obviously physical problem based upon what you've done with the OS. It's like a car manufacturer not repairing your brakes because you've had tinted windows put in.

That's entirely correct. Doesn't stop them trying to weasel out of it at every point though. It's a pain having to go to small claims court to get it done.

Also, Samsung have a policy of not honouring any warranty if the phone has been os modified. No matter if it's anything to do with the actual fault or not. Again, it's what's in the law vs what they try and get away with. You can always fight this stuff and generally the consumer eventually wins, but it's a long process.

My M8 is rooted and ROM'd. Beautiful phone. The camera software is awesome, i'm really enjoying playing around with all the effects. Strongly recommend.  The only thing I wish it had is the fingerprint scanner as I do think thats a good feature. But other than that, it's **** awesome!

Voided your warranty already then? Was the original software so bad you needed a custom ROM already?

Warranty isn't voided if there's a hardware issue. If there's a software issue with it I'll be able to fix that myself. Phones are pretty much impossible to brick these days software-wise.   :)

But yes, the phone was cluttered with "three" apps, and now it's configured to how I want it with no additional bloatware.

In the eyes of HTC it is. And to people like trading standards, it's not an unreasonable request of HTC for you to not modify the original (non-modifiable) software. Just hope you don't get a hardware fault otherwise you'll be faced with a nigh on impossible task of getting it repaired.

Congratulations on the new phone though :)

Generally speaking if there is a hardware fault (physical buttons stop working, micro-usb socket stopped working, no longer recognising SIM card etc) HTC will repair it even if the device has been rooted, specially if it's been returned back to a stock ROM. That said, i've been using HTC phones for about 10years, and the first thing I do is root/rom them. Never had an issue before so maybe i'm just lucky :)

and thanks :)

After reading the comments in this thread about the M8 and the review on techradar I am seriously thinking of getting it instead of the N5.  I am due an upgrade on the 30th April and my original plan was to sell my S3 and buy the N5 outright but now I am very tempted to just upgrade to the M8.  Is the camera of a similar standard to the S3?  That will do me if so.
