Alan Hansen mentioning at half time that, recently when Phil Dowd refereed a Man U match, he sent off Rooney and Scholes and Ferguson commented "Well, what do you expect? It's Phil Dowd".

That couldn't POSSIBLY have influenced his decision making in this match, could it?

Hope they can equalise the midfield battle a bit more next half.

sorry to inject some devils advocacy into this but if dunne had made that tackle on owen after 4 minutes and got sent off as well as them getting a pen this place would have gone into meltdown. yes, he should get booked, but not sent off.

i know that rules are rules and all that but no ref is ever going to send someone off after 4 minutes of a cup final. if it had been outside the box and right in the centre of the goal he may have gone, but it wasnt. we got a pen, and effectively started the game with a goal advantage - maybe he should have gone in the book, but he would still be on the pitch.

forget it now anyway. the lads have 45 minutes to write history...

To be fair, I weren't sure it was a red card because Agbonlahor's touch took him to the by-line but not yellow carding him or Carrick was a disgrace.

He dragged it back as Vidic was tearing at his shirt he couldn't possibly go anywhere, Vidic is last man should be a card at least everytime. Had Vidic not yanked his shirt Gabby would of shot.

Shot and missed...penalty was a good outcome...

Half-time assessment:

Mr. Dowd, get a grip. Not even carding Vidic for the tackle on Gabby? WTF?! Numerous "No more fouls" to Man U players but instantly booking Villa players?! I hate to blame the refs but more often than not the standard of refereeing has been dire this season...

Reckless passing (Cuellar, Collins - I'm blaming you) almost cost us dear. And Dunne's error did that just. Saying that, Man U has made errors, too - we just have to put more pressure on them. Kuszcak is bound to mess up at some point.

How Vidic is still on the pitch is a mystery to everyone but Phil Dowd.

Atrocious ref.

Beyond that, decent half. We've looked good going forwards for my money, defence is a tad shakey but nothing they shouldn't be able to handle.

It'd be nice if we weren't playing 12 mind.

Yeah, its exactly why he didn't send Vidic off. If it was at 80 mins it would have a been a red. Thats not what the rulebook says but thats how it went..

He should have walked. No debate. There was no protest from the United players or bench, and they couldnt believe their luck when he stayed on the park.

I see what you are saying about the ref not wanting to 'ruin' a cup final, but even then he should still have been sent off. It was a stonewall penalty, and the last defender had denied a goalscoring opportunity by fouling an attacker. The fact that Vidic didnt even get a yellow is mind boggling. Yes, he would still have been on the park, but being on a yellow with Gabby and Ash running at him means that Vidic would have had to had changed his game. He wouldnt have obstructed Ash towards the end of the first half for example.

United got away with murder. The players should worry about it after the final whistle, they have a game to win. We can still be pissed off about it.
