European football trip

My mate announced he got married the other day out of the blue.

Anyway he wants to go away for a belated stag do next September/October. He said he wants to go to Amsterdam. We've been there several times over the years. Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions?

We'd like to get it booked but the obvious issue is we won't know any fixtures. Holland is quite good as there are lots of teams within a fairly short train ride. So looking for towns/cities that have teams within travelling distance to ensure we can go to a match on the trip.

Any suggestions?

Went to rotterdam last month and thought is was an excellent city and maybe a nice alternative to the dam, probably wouldn't have the madness, hotels were slightly cheaper, beer wasnt

De kuijp is the big obvious stadium but there is sparta rotterdam there too who have a very interesting looking stadium and they don't sell out

Den Haag/Rotterdam is a good weekend trip and a bit off beaten track compared to Amsterdam. They have similar things to Amsterdam but less busy

ADO fans have a bit of a reputation though looks like they have gone to shit

Rotterdam was definitely In our early thoughts as an easy alternative to Amsterdam. Holland is easy to travel around and short distance so seems like a winner compared with other countries.

I do really like Amsterdam and been there several times with varying scales of madness. More recently have tended to avoid the congested touristy (red light) areas anyway.

been to amsterdam a fair bit and always wondered why people go there for a stag do (unless you want it to be super debaucherous). loads better places

i'd be looking at germany personally, but match tickets could be difficult depending on the team. we looked into bayern tickets when we went to munich and were basically told no chance

went to cologne for a mate's stag and that was excellent...similarly hamburg...not sure what it's like getting tickets for the respective teams though.

Depends on the game and your numbers, dortmund is another where you've got absolutely no chance, I've done frankfurt though and that was easy enough from cologne on the ICE but the trains are all about timing of when you buy the tickets, the regional trains which are considerably cheaper are slow and shit, cologne as a hub is good though, good city for a drink and in theory lots of grounds with 90 mins of there

I know a lad who's leaving here before Xmas and currently doing a ground tour, he was at an Aachen game 2 weeks ago that looked mental

If not a huge game Hertha you can get tickets easy, same with Leverkusen, Mainz and the last 2 are next to big cities so its not too far away. The others is possible but maybe not for a big stag party

The only thing in Germany they arent very fond of huge groups popping up in bars/restaurants unless in say Reeperbahn in Hamburg

i've experienced that in cologne too, the brauhauses will want you to sit outside and people will leave, also had it that i've been in a little bar drinking in a group and some very burly unfriendly men have turned up to watch on suspiciously which isnt fun, on the night its ok but daytime drinking blows their mind, they think nothing of starting their night out at 1am but drinking at 1pm is weird

I think its just how the bars were built here, tables are designed for maybe 5/6 people at most and nailed into the ground so cant move them

Booking a table at a brewery is probably best option if have 10/15 people. Dont even think about getting into a place with bouncers😂

Dusseldorf was very good when I went on a stag there earlier this year. Would easily be able to get tickets for their games too as they're in the second tier. But if you're in that sort of area, as people above have said, there's tons of places within an hour on the train. I don't think you'd have many issues with a decent sized group in Dusseldorf, Hamburg or Koln.

I've been to Stuttgart & Munich too and that was a little more difficult, particularly Munich.

for me Amsterdam is always disappointing  , unless your mates really want to shag prostitutes, I'd avoid it ( my mate that partook said the woman lay there, looked at her watch after a while and said, will you be much longer ...  of course, that could be on him rather than the profession on sale in Amsterdam :) )

not tried to get football tickets , but we do have a member of VT who runs a company specialising in this so you could try and PM him ( onefortheroad  I think is his user name ?)

drink wise ...

Was in Munich the other month ,  different areas seem to have more going on , the station area was busy but people mainly drinking and talking , not any music etc .... the Herzog Wilhelm park area had some late bars that were good fun  (was chatting to the owner of on bar "the Jaded monkey" and he said the bars don't' like large groups of English as they tend to annoy his regulars , so it might depend how well behaved you are when you stagger in  ... afternoon we went to beer garden on the river in an area called maximilianeum  and snaked our way back towards the Hofbrauhaus  .. no problems anywhere around there as a large group ..i

Dusseldorf - has a heap of bars , found it very relaxed and friendly   .. throw in a 30 in train ride to Cologne and you get a great twin centre lads trip  .. seemed to be many locals everywhere we went so a good place if you want to avoid to many drunk English

Hamburg - more touristy than the other places , my least favourite German drinking destination , but still a fun night

Mate of mine was in Stuttgart last week for a stag weekened and said it was good .. they had a beer festival going on , so timing wise for you that could be an option  , seems to be large group friendly

Aim for Cologne or Dusseldorf and you should have loads of games to choose from no matter how the fixtures fall.

Both great cities and as well as the two clubs there, Dortmund, Leverkusen, Monchengladbach, Duisberg, Bochum and Schalke are all within an hour or so.

We went to Cologne for my stag and went to watch Bayer Levekusen.

It's not going to be a stag do as such. Think there will most likely just be the 4 of us.

It was my mate who has got married who had said he wants to go to Amsterdam. I think it's just we've had several good visits together there for various reasons and wants to go for old times sake. When we've gone we've stayed and spent a lot of time in the Liedseplein area rather than the typical areas.

On the European football thing, we wanted to do something for my 40th. We’d done a game at the Nou Camp before, so was thinking Real Madrid. Unfortunately, tickets seemed impossible to get. So a quick change of plans and we are heading to PSG at the end of October. Tickets were easy enough to get as the official site has links to ticket resale, all official channels. We are sat in the same block but a few rows apart, no biggie. Just hope Mbappe doesn’t go on strike now.

Anyone been to see AS Roma at the Stadio? Looking at taking my old man in a couple of months and don't think he'd appreciate sitting with the Ultras? Where do the grandads sit?

i can't help with regards to where to sit but i've been to the rugby there a couple of times and it's a bit of a bugger of a ground to get away from. be prepared to have a bit of a walk to the metro (about 2 miles) or hang around until the buses start running as they close the roads

i'd get an uber to the ground as buses will be packed. it'll only cost about 10 euros from centre of town
