Birmingham City recently published their 2016/17 financial results, the first under the ownership of Trillion Trophy Asia (TTA), owned by Chinese businessman Paul Suen Cho Hung, and they did not paint a pretty picture. Some thoughts in the following thread #BCFC

Oh Dear

#BCFC loss before tax increased from £5.0m to £16.4m (loss after tax £18.1m), even though revenue grew by 19% (£2.8m) to £17.6m. All revenue streams increased: broadcasting £1.8m (higher solidarity payment from the new PL TV deal), commercial £0.7m and match receipts £0.3m.

Other operating income was also up £0.8m, but profit on player sales was £4.2m lower at £0.2m. However, main reason for #BCFC higher loss was £7.2m increase in wages (including termination payments to managers Gary Rowett & Gianfranco Zola), plus £2.2m more player amortisation.

#BCFC have consistently lost money, only reporting a profit once in last 5 seasons – and that was just £1.3m in 2014/15. Last season’s £16.4m loss is largest since the £20.1m deficit in 2008/09. Loss next season is likely to be even higher after Harry Redknapp’s summer spending.

The only season that #BCFC reported a significant profit in recent years was £16.4m in 2011/12, which was very largely due to £21.7m of once-off player sales (Roger Johnson, Scott Dann, Craig Gardner, Jean Beausejour, Cameron Jerome and Liam Ridgewell).

#BCFC EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation & Amortisation), which can be considered as a proxy for cash operating profit, has steadily declined from £14m in 2010 to £(13)m in 2017.

Despite #BCFC’s growth in 2016/17, revenue has dropped by more than two-thirds (£44m) in the six years since relegation from the Premier League. In the four years between 2012 and 2015, Birmingham benefited from £48m of parachute payments, but these stopped in 2016.

Despite the increase, #BCFC £17.6m revenue is still likely to be in the bottom half of the Championship, once all clubs have published 2016/17 results. For some context, Hull City and QPR revenue of £42m was around three times as much as Birmingham’s £14.7m in 2015/16.

The #BCFC wage bill surged 47% (£7.2m) from £15.3m to £22.5m in 2016/17 with playing staff up 30 to 94. Also included severance payments to managers and possible bonus payment to Redknapp for avoiding relegation. This has increased the wages to turnover ratio from 104% to 128%.

Although #BCFC wages to turnover ratio of 128% is far from ideal, it is not uncommon in the second tier. In fact, no fewer than 15 Championship clubs had ratios over 100% in 2015/16. That said, Birmingham’s ratio has almost doubled since the 67% in 2014/15, as revenue has fallen.

Grim reading for you blose fans

Standing in a dirty alleyway singing songs about Villa.

How very dare you - that's the garden of the White Swan; lovely pub.

You've got to ask questions about the mentality of a man that takes women's underwear to the pub so that he can sing a song in the garden.

oh wow, i've looked at the lower end of the table for the first time in months!

didn't realise they were that far down :D

They've won a couple in a row so think they are on the verge of some mid table push. I still think they are odds on to drop.
