Aston Villa Women

A  problem for us is scoring goals, we've scored just six goals in the league, our attackers have scored just one goal between them. Not sure if the women have a January window but something we could perhaps look at. We've had a difficult run of games recently, but apart from Man City on January 15th our fixtures list doesn't look too bad in the new year, so hopefully we will see some better results.

In other news small heath have lost 2-0 to a Leicester team that hadn't won any points before today, now they're bottom of the table.

'Coventry United were placed in voluntary liquidation, meaning their players are available, and there is interest in striker Katie Wilkinson from a few WSL clubs as well as the Championship. Wilkinson played under Aston Villa boss Carla Ward at Sheffield United and could reunite with her in the Midlands, while Coventry United team-mate Rio Hardy has trained at Villa for a few days and has interest from Durham. Villa defender Natalie Haigh is among those who could be open to a loan move in pursuit of regular game time...

Aston Villa have several targets as they try to bolster their attacking options. Players will also leave on loan in order to gain game time, including several talented youngsters.'

"When Aston Villa Women got promoted to the WSL one of the many, important tasks the club undertook was to restart the women’s academy. In Spring 2020, during the first lockdown, Youth Technical Director Cristina Torkildsen went about the daunting task of re-establishing Villa’s academy, effectively starting from scratch.

Torkildsen, first looked towards her former club Birmingham City, and recruited Academy Manager Jack Peel along with six academy players and a further six Under 16s from their West Midlands neighbours. Villa had an extremely successful first season back in the WSL Academy League finishing top of the league with a 100% track record.

Academy pathway into the first team

The success has continued this season and Villa U21s currently sit top of their division now under the leadership of ex-Villa captain Kerri Welsh. Since the formation of the new Academy, no less than four players have been given professional contracts with the first team.

The first was Olivia McLoughlin back in January 2021. The highly rated 17 year old can play in a variety of positions including right back and defensive midfielder. McLoughlin played a big part in Villa’s fight for survival last season when the team picked up several clean sheets in order to avoid the drop. This season Liv has shown her quality and desire to step in whenever needed especially against the big teams in the WSL.

The second was Freya Gregory in March 2021. Gregory, predominantely a left-sided forward, made her debut in February 2021 in the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. She famously scored the goal in the 1-1 draw with local rivals Birmingham City that went a long way towards securing the club’s survival in the top flight. This season Freya has played her part in helping the team including the victories away to Brighton and Birmingham.

These announcements were followed soon afterwards with Isobel Goodwin also signing a professional contract in March 2021. Striker, Goodwin featured in the matchday squad for the game against Spurs in February 2021 but then due to sustaining a long-term injury she didn’t feature again until the Conti Cup game against Sheffield United where she made her debut coming on as a substitute. During her rehabilitation, Izzy has had several impressive displays with the academy.

The most recent announcement is Laura Blindkilde Brown who was awarded a professional contract in September 2021. Brown, who has chosen her Danish middlename to be on the back of her shirt, can play either as an attacking midfield or on the wing. She scored an impressive looping goal in the team’s 7-0 win over Sunderland and the in-demand play maker is bound to be a key player for Villa going forwards.

Meet Villa’s stars of the future

With such a talented pool of players in the Academy there are bound to be more professional contracts on the way. Already, we’ve seen several other players make their first team debut in the Conti Cup and several others are on the verge of a call-up.

Olivia Rabjohn, a central midfielder, made an impressive debut in the match against Sheffield United. Evie Rabjohn also made her debut in the same match playing as a centre-back. Both sisters have been impressing with the Academy both this season and last and are bound to come into contention again for further first team games.

Two more players also made their debuts in the Sheffield game. Deearna Missy Goodwin is a forward with a phenomenal goal scoring record. The exciting forward has been scoring goals for fun for the Academy team and her talent has not gone unnoticed. Another forward, who made a late appearance for her debut against the Blades is Mary McAteer. The Wales U19 striker has had some consistently good performances for the Academy, week in, week out, and will surely get more opportunities in the first team.

To be honest, Aston Villa Academy have so many more talented players and having watched several of their games this season, the talent on display is something to admire. Lauren Purchase and Katie Ward are both deservedly, Wales U19 internationals.

Other players to look out for in future include midfielder Molly Lemon and goalkeeper Anna Draper. In addition, a number of other players have all impressed this season including Kelcie Fallon, Emily Fletcher, Hayley Hoare, Martha McPhail, Olivia Milner, Megan Shaw, Saffron O’Brien, Leonie Joyce, Lexi Edwards, Alice Keitley and Georgia Mullett.

Future is bright in Claret and Blue

With the transfer market in the Women’s Super League being so competitive and many of the bigger clubs looking to abroad for talent, Villa are very lucky they can produce so many home-grown players of their own.

Four players have already been awarded first team contracts in the space of nine months. Eight Academy players have so far made their first team debuts. Plus with so many other talented players in the squad, the future is looking for very bright for the Villans.

The future is now. Up the Villa!"

Our U21s play at home to Leicester tomorrow, a chance to back to the top of the league, Everton top at the moment but they've played one more game than us.

Davison I thought looked good for us when she came on against Sunderland, she kept the ball well and didn't make any mistakes with her passing, kind of a no nonsense type midfielder, could possibly be a good signing for Leicester.

As for Anna Patten, I wasn't expecting us to sign a defender, but coming from Arsenal and having been called up by England at senior level, it seems like she will be a good addition, hopefully one or two more to come, especially in the attacking area.

Lost 1-0, Leicester one of the better teams in the league, but a bit of a shock result, first defeat of the season.

I'm a little surprised we've loaned Freya Gregory out as whenever I've seen her play I've thought she's looked just as good as some of the first choice attackers, surely has to mean we've got another attacker coming in.

Edit: Would appear that Missy Goodwin has permanently left the club, a big shame, as she was a regular scorer for our U21s and an England Youth international. Her deal with Leicester is only until the end of the season, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's already got a move lined up for after that.

We shouldn't really be loaning players to relegation rivals.

Genuine question, do you really think we are in a relegation fight when the rabble only have one point and only one team gets relegated?

The three matches we have won have been against Brighton, Leicester and the rabble and we've got to play them again.

The rabble are exactly that, a rabble and a 9 point swing is a hell of a lot of catching up to do.

I don't think we've loaned them Missy Goodwin, she's seemingly left us and signed a deal with them until the end of the season, I guess they're offering her first team football, and she's an highly rated enough prospect that when the deal with Leicester ends at the end of the season she will get plenty of offers, maybe from some of the division's better teams as well.

With Freya Gregory I imagine we've decided that her getting more first team experience and game time with Leicester is more beneficial to us in the long run than it will be detrimental to us this season, would take a big turn around in form now from Leicester and small heath to catch us.

We play Man City next, but after that have a run of games where we can hope to pick up some points, shoudn't really be in any danger of relegation.

That would be the shock of this season and probably the last two seasons put together. And not good for us, as the gap between ourselves and the last relegation place would get smaller.

Blues beating Arsenal 2-0 so far this afternoon. Would be a major shock if they get the win.

It did indeed finish 2-0 to Blues. Take nothing away from them but seems Arsenal had some Covid cases as they could only name five subs.  Saving grace today was that Leicester lost again.

As long as we don’t lose to Blues and Leicester during the second half of the season then we should be ok.
