"What a way to score your first goal for the club!

"Some cynics said Villa had paid too much money for young Kodjia when he arrived from Bristol City before the window closed.

"But, on the evidence of that stunning 20-yard left-foot curler, if he can score a few more like that this season, Roberto di Matteo may actually have got a bargain."

Aston Villa 1-0 Brentford

Posted at20:19

With 15 minutes of the first half remaining, there is a sense that Aston Villa should try lifting the tempo of this game and really chase a second goal.

Brentford are not looking overly troubled, even when Jordan Ayew was flying on the ball. Harlee Dean the man to shut things down with some smart defending.

Did someone say that there isn't cutting edge from Aston Villa...

Well, a razor-sharp cross from Ross McCormack finds Rudy Gestede, who flashes his header just wide. Very nearly 2-0, that.

Aston Villa are not being allowed to relax at the back. Tommy Elphick looks cool and calm, but that is simply how the man plays, he has had a bit to do in the home defence.

No big questions asked of Villa keeper Pierluigi Gollini, but he is called into action by John Egan from a corner.
