Isn't a problem with android tablets that a lot of the apps in the Play store are phone apps that have just been stretched to fit a tablet screen?

Some are like that, some are dedicated versions.

Yes. This was a conscious decision from Google to allow apps to not be locked to one format or another. They decided that if it was just another screen size and resolution option when developing, the developer would account for the larger screen whether phone, phablet or tablet. Which is exactly what happened, and there was no delay on apps appearing on android tablets as at the very least you could just run the unoptimised phone apps. But for some reason it's brought up as a bad thing.

It was just something I read about when I was looking at buying an android tablet the other week. It came up as a criticism during an ongoing review of the Pixel C

Yes and no, the good developers out there add functionality and design when the app encounters a bigger screen and higher resolution. The gmail app for instance is quite a bit different on a tablet compared to a phone even though it's the same install-base.

I know tablets are in somewhat of a transitional stage and may not survive too much longer but I'm still after another one as I like being able to play a couple of Android games (memory hogs Real Racing 3 and Tapped Out particularly) and watching films/tv with a bigger screen. Unfortunately my 2014 Samsung Tab S (16GB) is constantly telling me it's full and moving apps to the SD card is doing nothing so I'm looking at a replacement but the options seem limited.

So far I've narrowed it down to Pixel C or the Lenovo Yoga Book. Both are 64GB and around the £300 mark through various sites (maybe a refurb). I want android, I want a 10" plus screen and it must be able to cope with my limited catalogue of games and then it's just general surfing, youtube etc. Not for business or anything and can't justify the likes of a top of the range Samsung just for casual use.

What are people's views? Any other suggestions?

I've not owned a tablet before but I'm now considering getting one as I think I'd like to buy FM Touch (don't have time for the full game but it seems Touch offers a bit more to get your teeth into than Mobile) and it'd be useful for watching some football and bits of other catch-up TV on around the house, as I get the TV to myself increasingly less these days.

I've never owned anything Apple but it seems they set the standard. However, the new Tab S7 looks good too: it comes with the stylus and I could get the keyboard cover with it for £714 from Currys at the moment - would rather not shop with them but seems a better deal than anywhere else. Keyboard means I could also use it for work stuff as a secondary laptop, which would be much more portable than my current weighty beast. Then I think that if I'm spending that much on a tablet, I might as well take the plunge and get an S7+ which looks fantastic, especially the display. But then we're talking daft money and I think I could spend far less and get an S6 Lite which would do what I wanted, but I'm not totally sure having not owned a tablet before! Anyone got any experience with any of them, or any advice? Is it worth shelling out the extra?

Don't buy an Android tablet. I strongly recommend the Lenovo Chromebook Duet.

I don’t use a tablet myself but did buy both my kids a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 2019 10.1” tablet last Christmas. They were on offer at Curry’s at £149 and included 32gb SD card and Samsung smart case.

I can honestly say that they have been sublime. They’ve not missed a beat all year and kids push them to the limit. No lagging, no crashing, battery life is great.

You could get a Bluetooth keyboard for about £10 if you want to do some serious typing.

Avoid android tablet because the apps are typically built for mobile rather than tablet? That's the main thing I've read against it.

The Lenovo looks good. Is it mainly value that would make you get that over an option like an iPad air, or are there other advantages?

Appreciate the advice - @Genie too.

Avoid android tablets because they are dead ducks. The support for upgrades is poor.

Avoid ipads because of the lack of multiple user support (and the insane prices), particularly where kids (or other people) are involved. Personally I don't like the Apple product lock in.
