Yep. I had no idea that was going on, but cancelling it definitely looked like an election move, rather than a move for genuine transport reasons. There's also the usual grabbing what they can and leaving a mess type stuff, but that's just absolutely standard.

It seems crazy that someone who was never elected can make this decision.

Let's face it, we've had; 3 Prime Ministers, 2 failed economic policies, a genuine economic disaster, increased climate pledges, decreased climate pledges, migrants being stopped on ships, migrants being HOUSED on ships, partygate, covid emergencies, covid exaggerations, covid underestimates, a lockdown and so many ministerial changes it's impossible to count, since the last election.

Possibly a dumb question from across the pond.

What if Starmer and Labour came out and committed to the Birmingham to Manchester part of HS2? Would that been seen as a positive?

They are being very quiet on it, as with most things, so as not to upset those dead set against it. They just say they don't have access to the sums to make a decision.

I think they probably would like to change it back but why rock the boat? They're just letting the Tories commit suicide without actually saying anything. I don't think we'll see much more from them till they actually win the election. Then they'll show their cards.

I think the issue is Business wants it, politicians want it, but it could still be a vote loser with the people because of the bad press.

Business and politicians want it because they know it offers massive benefits and growth. Public don't want it because the press keep telling them it's a wast of money.

Apparently Sunak chucked away £2.6bn today because of the work already carried out in preparation work.

Also a good deal of their alternative schemes were already committed to so again its the old trick of renouncing things like they're new.

It's ok though because I've witnessed it, once in my 40 odd years on this planet, when we didn't have a conservative government it was all different like because, erm, well, it was different like and Tony Blair was a breath of fresh air and erm, yeah. So now Kiers like Tony on steroids and power at all costs it is so Definitely things will be different under him just like the last time (the only time in my life) there wasn't a tory government. Yep gotta keep doing this over and over and it will get better sometime or something. :(

Isn't  that what did for Mark Clarke? (Ok, it was technically bullying, but still)

I got to be honest I had never heard of him until I just googled him. My post was meant in jest though.

That's  the thing with this lot though, always full of unpleasant surprises. It's  astonishing for example that the senior treasurer of the party is an actual former minister in Hosni Mubarak's regime.

The current Secretary of State for Defence used to sell get rich quick books as a scam under multiple aliases.

Changing the way we do politics is definitely the new slogan.

Also accusing Labour of not knowing what they want and flip flopping with policies after cancelling THE major infrastructure project they'd put out to review multiple times and changing net zero initiative dates they'd themselves set.

It's working.

Some politician from Burnley was just on BBC Breakfast saying how his new railway will benefit his constituents far more than HS2 ever would.

His people will be listening to this, but they'll never get their railway.  It'll be in planning for years and still see the same business case / value for money arguments before being axed as the budget turns out to be multiples of the HS2 savings allocated to it in 2023.

Apparently in the documents issued to support the fact that the business case is no longer there for HS2 they've used passenger numbers from 18 months ago, immediately after Covid lockdown.

My own train journey into work has changed out of all recognition in 18 months and in fact I've noticed differences in even the last 6 months.

I've no doubt over the next couple of years we'll be back closer and closer to where we were.

I've a feeling that by the time HS2 was supposed to open there will be lot's of talk about the creaking victorian railway network and what the hell we can do about it and cursing the short sighted cancellation of HS2.

They’re clamping down on the fake gay boat immigrants, woke science, socialist pork tax, and all those sex pest blokes blagging their way on to maternity wards, so they’ve got my vote.
