Maine is the furthest East. But I get the feeling there's a trick answer?

Are US armed forces bases technically given a State and it's one of those?

Technically , Alaska is the furtherest East , but obviously not nearest to Africa  , so I think that would make you correct with Maine

There is some US territory at Runnymede near me where they have the JFK memorial , but the UK retains sovereignty and it's not not a State either , but that could have been a decent trick answer

Don’t know what state it is in but doesn’t Cape Cod stick out a fair bit to the east?

It does, but the eastern edge of Maine wins it. Now, what country in Africa is closest to mainland USA?

Alaska is definitely not East. Even if you consider the international date line to be straight.

Runnymede would have be a great trick answer.

If Maine is the correct answer then the closest African country has to be in the north west. So it's Morocco.

it stretches over the 180 degree line of latitude so that makes it in the Eastern hemisphere by definition

the date line isn't straight as you correctly point out for various reasons  , but to my mind the date line and 180 degree aren't the same thing , though I may be in a minority of one on this view  :)

shouldn't that be 12 countries ?

Eire

Niue

Mali

being the 3 missing from the ones given

though Eire is cheating I suspect and Mali is officially called the Republic of Mali , which brings its back down to 10

Most of their official names are longer...

'The Sultanate of Oman', 'The Republic of Chad', 'The Republic of Fiji', 'The Republic of Iraq', 'The Republic of Peru', T'he Togolese Republic', #Lao People's Democratic Republic', 'The Republic of Mali'.
