VT Supporter Popular Post mjmooney Posted November 14, 2013 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2013 As most of you know, I'm a quiz nut. I'm part of a pub quiz team (with a good record for winning free beer), I love Trivial Pursuit, etc., and I rarely miss Pointless, Eggheads, University Challenge, Only Connect (all four on Mondays!) and Mastermind. I listen to Brain of Britain, Round Britain Quiz and Counterpoint (music quiz), etc. on Radio 4. I'm off to my second pub quiz of the week this evening. So here's the VT quiz thread. Post links to online quizzes, make up your own questions, ask for help with ones that are baffling you, tell us your best bub quiz anecdotes, whatever. Cryptic crossword fans also welcome. Meanwhile, here are some Guardian quizzes

Moderator bickster Posted November 14, 2013 Moderator Share Posted November 14, 2013 What was the largest isand on earth before Australia was discovered?Define island. I'd suggest that a land mass that effectively makes up the mainland of an entire continent isn't one otherwise the Americas are an island. Also discovered by whom?
chrisp65
no, its a silly trick, Australia was still the largest (apologies, I lost a quiz on this once and it just eats me every day) I know I know! it's a poor question poorly defined and ignores indigenous people's etc etc., and I lost out on it against a knob that genuienely thought winning a quiz at a parent teacher evening proved his Alpha status - which it did, but in a knob way Edited November 14, 2013 by chrisp65
VT Supporter mjmooney Posted November 14, 2013 Author VT Supporter Share Posted November 14, 2013 (edited) Just got back from the local. They've just started a new quiz, made most amusing by the fact that the landlord is the living incarnation of Count Arthur Strong - reading out questions 'researched' by the barmaid. Some examples: Q. Which dog, beginning with "S", was named after an Australian sheepdog? A. Kelpie Q. What does the Latin phrase "in vitro" mean? A. Outside the body (our answer "in glass, i.e. in a test tube", was not allowed, despite being correct) Q. Which country, founded by Kenneth McAlpine in the 5th Century, was called "Alba"? A. Scotland (well yes, but Kenneth McAlpine???) Q. Who was the youngest daughter of King George the... fourth... VI means fourth, doesn't it? A. Princess Margaret We won by a fairly huge margin. Will be going back, for the comedy value. Edited November 14, 2013 by mjmooney
