villa4europe
The star wars / James bond one in full on super hard mode would be which James Bond film was stated as coming next at the end of the credits of the spy who loved me but was pushed back due to the success of star wars meaning they released xxx instead? As in "James bond will return in yyy" but he didn't because of star wars Spoiler xxx = moonraker yyy = for your eyes only That's a bit of James bond trivia for you! And until goldeneye it was the most successful bond film box office wise so it worked Edited May 17, 2020 by villa4europe
mjmooney Posted May 17, 2020 Author VT Supporter Share Posted May 17, 2020 Films are a weak area for me in quizzes. And we don't have a film specialist in our pub quiz team. We're pretty strong on: Art Literature History Science Geography pre-80s pop music Football But shakey on: Sport other than football Film and TV post-80s pop music We probably need to recruit... villa4europe
Yep that's what I had as the answer, it caused an argument though! One of my mates said "it used to be..." then put something else, then argued about it
Stevo985 Posted May 18, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted May 18, 2020 On the discussion of hard quizzes, there's nothing worse than someone setting a ridiculously hard quiz in an effort to show how brainy they are (I'm not for one second suggesting you were doing that V4E!) We have a weekly one with work and there's all sorts of a range of abilities in there. We take it in turns to set the questions and most people do it sensibly. Like 5 easy questions 3 tough questions and 2 really hard questions. Last week it was a guy in my team's turn and the quiz was ridiculous. I came 2nd with 2 out of 10. The winner got 4 The guy who set it smugly claimed he knew 9 out of the 10 answers. The first question was "Name any of Harold Godwinson's brothers who died in 1066". I'm sure there will be some VTers who know that but not a single person on this quiz could even guess at a name. So that set the tone 4 out of 10 questions I couldn't even make a guess at
villa4europe
Yeah it's hard to know where to pitch it! Really you want questions that even if people don't know the answer they can still guess at it or better try and find those tip of your tongue questions that piss you off because you know it but get brain freeze, questions where you either know it or you don't are a bit shit Last week I was the only person in 8 lads who knew what film was set on the nostromo, that to me is an easy question but if you've never seen it then forget it
Stevo985 Posted May 18, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted May 18, 2020 Yeah to be fair to the guy in question he's a british history enthusiast. So there's a good chance he'd know a lot of those answers and maybe not realise that your average joe wouldn't have a clue. But either he was showing off or he really did have no clue where to pitch it! 5 minutes ago, villa4europe said: Last week I was the only person in 8 lads who knew what film was set on the nostromo, that to me is an easy question but if you've never seen it then forget it See I know the answer to that but I wouldn't think it was an easy question at all. mjmooney Posted May 18, 2020 Author VT Supporter Share Posted May 18, 2020 The perennial problem with setting quiz questions - if I know the answer, I think it's too easy. If I don't know the answer, I think it's too hard.

If I don't know the answer, I think it's too hard. True. But I think there's also an ability to think "I know the answer to this but I don't think many other people will" If the question is "Who wrote Harry potter?" then I know that's an easy question because I know it and I know lots of other people will. If the question is "Which Aston Villa striker scored twice in the 1957 FA Cup Final?" then I'm not going to think that's an easy question just because I know the answer.

The guy in question assuming everyone would know intimate details of British 11th Century history was a massive fail. I've noticed that if we start winning it too regularly, the music and literature questions seem to get replaced by soap operas and rugby league for a while. 1
villa4europe
To me the best questions are those that you know the answer but you can't think of it, so instead you have to take an educated guess giving you a sense of anticipation as the answers are read out, a buzz if you get it right and disappointment if you get it wrong and realise you should have got it right, that's heightened when in a team and the guessing process opens up debate as to what you should go with That history question is none of that, you might as well go to the bar when the answer is read out, it's not even a case of I haven't got a clue but I'm interested in the answer Easy example would be what's the biggest selling beer in the world? I don't know but I'm going to guess at it with Heineken then stick around to hear that the answer is bud and then be disappointed that it's something I could have guessed at

Think quizzes can be hard to manage. Too easy, everyone gets bored. Too hard/obscure, everyone loses interest. At work we’ve been doing a load remotely but each week now the quiz master is being asked to do special rounds for people as they are struggling with general knowledge... wouldn’t have much issue with it but they don’t turn up for their round so everyone else is stuck with the f***ing Disney round...
